Meanwhile MvdP has gone beast mode in the peloton, and just took back 30 seconds in short order.

He might get better. Too early to just give up now.

They should have just sat up after the start and given up completely, you say. How would that have been wise? He would have been crucified in the French media.
Maybe you're right with Gaudu. But he rather gets stronger with 5 rest days and setting himself new, archivable goals from my pov.

Gall is just idiotic however.

If I'm UAE, I would consider really pushing the final climb to try and go for bonus seconds at the finish with Pogacar. It's not much easier than Jaizkibel and what sprinters are left will start it with much more tired legs than they did that climb.
