On the first day of afterthought, the Tour gave to me... Philipsen winning by a bike length or three.

The route
After starting from Moûtiers, capital of the Tarentaise valley that has become the epicentre of French skiing, it's a swift farewell to the Alps as the riders get to stick to the valleys for once. It takes 60 kilometres before the first time the road rises notably, this is also immediately a KOM.

The Tour organisation has even been so kind to send the riders through the Tunnel du Chat, minimising the elevation gain. This is the first 2.0 kilometres of the profile below, followed by a kilometre at 4.5%.

There is then a second KOM at Côte de Boissieu.

After this, it's through the Jura, down the same valley road used on stage 13. This section also contains the intermediate sprint.

The finale is quite flat save for a false flat drag up to Ceyzériat.

Final kilometres

One last technical finale. The fun begins at 5.5k to go, when the riders turn right at this roundabout.

At the next roundabout, both sides are open, but the left is the shorter by far. Also, yes, it's really that slanted, it's not the picture.

The roundabout fiesta concludes with this duo, both times with only one side being open.

The map then warns for a narrowing, but there is literally nothing at the place of the marking. The only thing I can think of that could be meant is this traffic island 100 metres prior, although it seems easy enough to remove...

The final big turn, to the left, does contain a narrowing.

The final kilometre is untechnical, with a lazy right-hander that won't even require braking, before a slight drag up to the line.

could go either way, I guess, with the lack of sprinters left. Teams like Jayco, DSM or Uno-X may see a sprint as their best chance, but that's (apart form Alpecin of course) probably about it.

This will be a sprint. Stage 19 could go either way.

It's been a while since the last sprint. Therefore I am certain we're going to see teams like Jayco delude themselves into thinking they can beat Philipsen and help the chase as well as the ever so tiring blockade. It doesn't make sense in the slightest, but teams rarely make sense.

you're probably right, it's just that the amount of strong rouleurs with not much else left to do is imense. I mean, on paper, we could get a breakaway of Cavagna/Lampaert/Asgreen, Cort/Bettiol, van Aert, Küng, Politt, Campenaerts/Vermeersch, Mads P, Mohoric and so on. Then it doesn't matter anymore what Jayco or Alpecin would prefer the stage to finish like.

But yeah, in the end they all may save themselves for Friday instead. Or Guillaume Martin joins the move again ;)

Meh, whatever is left of the peloton after today I'll be rooting for. (Vingo might as well just ride off into the sunset [Champs-Élysées] all on his own.)

My guess is #19 is where Alpecin let MvdP go into the break sort of as a thank you and as a reason not to work.

Yep 100%. Tomorrow is a sprint, another Philipsen win but Alpecin will give Mathieu his chance on Friday. Also because it isn't the easiest stage to control anyways.

Breakaway of less than 3 and a Phillipsen win I think
I think it's should be physically impossible that there is not a bigger more dangerous break. I know team are delusional but let's say even Bora, Jayco, DSM and Cofidis are stupid enough to con't split their chances... that leaves me still with Total, Lotto, Astana, Arkea, Israel, FDJ (no win until now), Bahrain, Ineos (Fraile/Castro), Soudal-QS to go for the break. Even UAE and Jumbo - what have they to loose on this stage. Van Aert has still no win and you don't need Trentin/Laengen/Großschartner/Bjerg to go to 3 km with the race decided.

Nah, teams are dumb so all the teams with a sprinter will think they can win. GC teams will be like we've got to protect our top 20 place and then others will be like stage 19 is a better shot, and then a ton are just going to be so tired they don't want to.

I reckon we get maybe Arkea, Lotto and Quick Step in the break.

That might be enough. I agree, Lotto and Quickstep will want to try both this stage and Friday, and that will draw out a few other stage hunters. This might be the best chance to win. I'd rather take my chances in, say a group of 5 - 7 in this stage vs the sprint teams than in a 25 man break on stage 19 against Van Aert, VDP et al

No doubt that Jumbo likely will try to get Van Aert that stage-win from now on, now that the GC gap is this heavy, and here in the third week, the power factor amongst the sprinters, is somewhat out watered.

You recon they will try WVA in the sprint or try and have him go in a break?

So you have a rider who finished 2nd behind Philipsen and you don't support that rider ? Why are you even at the TDF? I have no idea today why Jayco rode for S.Yates.
