I've never really understood this dynamic in a breakaway where guys are attacking each other when, in this case, there's 15 km of rolling prior to 2 final climbs with the last one at 8%. Aside from Healy, who we know has special qualities for that, why do they think trying to go solo now will increase their chances of winning or even getting on the podium. Is it just racing instincts?

Have always loved Simmons aggressive style of racing, but this doesn't seem the best moment, or company to attack.

Could just be his last throw of the dice, given the amount of work he does in the flat stages.
