Unless you think he doesn't recover at Lenny Martinez' dropped-from-breakaway pace I assume it's because he wanted rid of yellow
That isn't the key assumption, the question is whether he thought he had enough left to have a shot at dropping Vingegaard. That doesn't really change when both of them are riding at recovery pace.

This is exactly what I thought watching it. It's like he thinks he had the lead over Pog.
What do you expect he'd get out of an attack on that final hill?

Visma's tactic is clearly to wear out Pog and his team while minimizing how much time he gains over Vingegaard on finishes like this. A Vingegaard attack could easily be countered by a Pog one that would win him a couple of seconds.
