In one-week races, Jalabert and Kelly also won 4 stages. Those are the most recent examples. Maertens and Merckx also did it.
after the race today, Swiss TV congratulated Pogacar on equalling Ferdy Kübler's record of three stage wins in Romandie from the 1950's. His reply was "so it's not a record, is it?"

As I said, any athlete with even a modicum of pride would want to win on their own merit. Being gifted a victory is the polar opposite of what sport stands for, which, at its core, is competition. Fixing the result isn't sport. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.
But isn't that exactly what's happening in almost all breakaway wins? (except those that break manages to steal from the sprinters) Breakaway riders are only allowed to race for the stage win because better (suited for that parcour) riders don't care enough and want an easy (or easier) day

Lots can go wrong in a sprint finish. I doubt you realise how good an in-form Maertens was a cyclist.
Sure but he never even managed to win a monument. so comparing his dominance of 1 vuelta with the dominance of Pogacar throughout the entire season seems not even in the same ballpark to me.

I don't think it's the same. One thing to manage the effort over the length of the race, another is making the effort (by being the lead group) and arrange to give up your chances.

Leysin, archetypal Tour de Romandie conditions, featuring a young Cadel and a Frigo!

What a sprint form Zülle considering he probably he couldn't see much. Also Santi Pérez with one of his best pre 2004 Vuelta individual results.

It's a shame that ww.itsmillartime.com is no longer online after they renovated and refurbished it.
Reminds me of early Spring races in Washington and Oregon. Don't miss those days.
