Why were there such big splits? I mean Chicci is usually one to get dropped pretty easily when there is a climb involved.

Apparently Saxo Bank was splitting the peloton in the cross wind, according to their website anyways: http://www.team-saxobank.com/ny_news.asp?n_id=3471

all behind contador if he races
no rasmussen :( 5 years i was waiting for it and nothing...

Rasmussen has had stomach problems during the last week which ruined his preparations. They are riding for Schumacher for the GC, and I reckon Rasmussen is hoping for a stage win towards the end of the race.

Guardini was dropped I guess. No surprise, really.

Would it kill people to read the thread once in a while? Look at the weather and the size of the front group - all we heard on the tickers was crash here, split there. Viviani, Pozzato and Visconti weren't in the group either, suppose they were dropped too

DUDE - Relax a little you seem to spend more time telling people what to do, so I thought I would tell to relax.

I've read the entire thread and watched the race live, thank you. And yes, I do consider getting dropped in the crosswinds as getting dropped, just like Guardini was dropped on 5/6 stages in Qatar last year.

If you look further in the picture you can see someone from QS also raising his hands in the air and next to him a guy from Saxo also raising his hands. Lol.

That "someone from QS" is called Francesco Chicchi and just won the stage... the other hands visible right next to him belong to soigneurs/fans/whatever.

Contador didn't quite realise that it wasn't his guy who just won... maybe he needs to get used to the new jerseys.

The sprint was so close, and Chichi didn't raise his hands on the vid.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that isn't Chicchi. As you said, he didn't raise his arms. At least not right after the finish.

Also, let's not forget JJ was first announced as the winner. So maybe that prompted Alberto even more to raise his arm in victory.

Chicchi was the only OPQS rider around... the photo was taken way beyond the crossing of the finish line by Chicchi. You see Contador, Eichler, Arroyo on this photo. They all finished between 15 and 25.

It IS Chicchi celebrating down there.
