Mountain jersey are a big joke, cycling would be better off without them nowadays. They never seem to reward the best climber. The new rules for the Tour last year were pretty good though, but Giro/Vuelta...

Last year in the Volta a Catalunya there was only one mountain stage which Contador won and he still didn't win the mountain jersey lol.

to win the mountain jersey you have to do some effort... Contador is going fast only on the MTF climb, and he does not care of all the other mountains... Rubiano is not good like him as climber, but he's taking seriously each mountain...

It's the king of mountains for the best climber, not the guy who sucks and has to go in a breakaway to achieve something. In the Giro Garzelli basically won the mountain jersey because of one mountain in the middle of a stage that gives way too many points

Otherwise we can just name it the KOB jersey... King of breakaways.

When's the last time a poor climber won a KOM title? You've still got to be able to climb.

the best climber is usually rewarded with the overall classification... Contador at the Giro, Cobo at the Vuelta, Evans at the Tour...the KOM is something to increase the competition also on that mountains the are not MTF...

They give us something to watch before the favourites spend the last climb looking at each other ffs

Because Moncoutie and Garzelli were so interesting to watch? They were trying to win a stage from a breakaway, it would have been just as interesting without the jersey existing, and with that I mean not interesting at all. Interesting KoM battles are a thing from the past.

That's not what the KoM is about. Lucien van Impe would turn around in his grave if he heard you. Lucikly he's not dead.

The KoM rarely increases competition on mountains that are not MTF. When have we ever seen an interesting KoM battle?

Stage 19 Tour de France 2011, Andy fought for it...(and let Cadel catch him)

Evans was not the best climber at the tour + cobo was not the best climber in the vuelta either.

The fact that Andy Schleck could have won the mountains jersey on the alpe de huez stage by just coming ahead of a couple of guys who he was with over the galibier yet totally ignored it proves how much the KOM jersey is rated by the gc riders.
Of course it does not prove how good a climber the rider is but rather how well timed he is at breakingaway, that is unless a specialist climber sets out (like van impe) aiming to win the points without any reagrd for GC, only in that case would the competition ever become even remotely interesting.
The format the tour has makes the KOM much more relevant yet the riders who gain the majority of points and will be battling it out for the jersey will be mainly the gc riders who do not care for the jersey, so there is an argument to say that if it should be a competition at all, it should be one which favours breakwayists who target it.
Yet in this years tour due to the amount of time trialling i have a feeling some pretty strong climbers will be challenging for the jersey due to the fact that they will be put out of contention by the tt's

The problem is that the best climbers don't care about the mountain jersey since they care more for the GC.

THIS ONE!

if the best climber should always win the mountain jersey, we can give it to him before the race since in 90% of the case you already know who is...

Do we?

That would have been quite embarassing in the vuelta.

I know that, that's why I'd rather have it they make a jersey called king of breakaways instead of the crap we're getting now. But like I said before, I do like the new rules of the KoM jersey in the Tour.
