Tour de Slovaquie UCI 2.1 (12/09 - 16/09)

Page 2 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Today is the only mountain top finish in the race, unfortunately there is no live TV coverage, apparently there will be 30 minute highlights in the evening on our national channnel, will post a link if I find it. The stage will have over 3000mts of climbing in 164km. The resort hosted finish of Tour the Pologne stage 5 in 2014, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMu4bZQBGrI. The finishing climb itself is not selective enough alone at 7.3km @ 4.9%,but it will be done twice and all day is up and down.

A shame Laporte didn't win. It would have been hillarous with 4 QS riders on spots 2-5.

Why is the race called Okolo Slovenska when it's in Slovakia?

Because Slovensko = Slovakia
Easy to confuse with Slovenia.

If I didn't know that Tour of Slovakia was happening right now and I had no memory of country flags, I'd be inclined to think the race was in Slovenia with that name. That certainly seems to be case for some Danish commentators, who just mentioned during the Vuelta, that "Bob Jungels won a prologue in Slovenia".

A quick update from stage 1:

55km from finish
5 man break - CICCONE Giulio (Bardiani CSF), SLEEN Torjus (Uno-x Norwegian Team),HARING Martin (Dukla BB), PIASKOWY Emanuel (Team Hurom) ,DINA Daniel (Pannon Cycling Team)

Peloton @ 1.20 led mainly by Quick Step and Gazprom riders

Still 2 x 1cat. climbs left(7.3km @4.9%)

It doesn't help that we have nearly identical flag as well :) If I got 1€ for each time I heard commentators confusing our two countries I would be richer then Bill Gates now. Imagine if Carlton Kirby one day had to comment on our race, how many times would he get it wrong?

It is funny that in Slovak Slovenia = Slovinsko, so we change only one vowel to distinguish our country from Slovenia :) And if my knowledge is correct "Slovakian girl in Slovak" and "Slovenian girl in Slovenian" are one exactly same word "Slovenka" :)

Was it then Czecho-Slovensko or something similar 30 years ago?
And where does the Slovakia thing come from then, if it's not that in your own language? Did someone misspell the name at some point?

Oh, and congrats to QS for their 63rd victory of the season (but important things first)

Ride of the day by young Attila Valter(20) coming home in the same time as Alaphilippe and Hermans.
He finished 9th in the very hilly UEC U23 RR this year and has been improving at a fast rate this year, one to watch for the future.
Overall Hungarian cycling is on the rise, his teammate from Pannon cycling team Marton Dina(22) has good results too, while in the mean time
Quick Step has taken Barnabas Peak(44th in Tour de L'Avenir) under their wings from August

Yeah it was "Československo", but it goes way back to 1918 after World War I. I do not know English etymology for the word "Slovakia", maybe it has something to do with the word for male member of Slovak nation in our language which is "Slovák".

Jungels, Alaphilippe, Terpstra, Lampaert, Keisse, Stybar,.. Some very high profile names for such an unknown race in Slovakia with a very low profile startlist in general.

Why is Quick Step there anyway?

To win…
Is there a race you don't follow, RhD?

Not really. I follow what I can. :D

And in a shocking piece of news Quickstep did not win today!
Stage was won by Rudiger Selig.

Yes, the stage had a technical run in with the finish on the Athletic track. Selig was best placed, although Lampaert and Stybar were faster at the end, they couldn't find enough room to squeeze by Selig. Unofficial results:

1. Selig
2. Lampaert
3. Stybar
4. Benedetti
5. Alaphilippe

Pack and +10 sec.

Peloton split today on some hills, at one stage was down to about 30 riders, but another larger group re-joined with Cofidis and Laporte. The last few kms had promised very tricky run in and it did split the peloton.
This race has a habit to throw some unconventional and very messy finales, which in past were heavily criticized. Unfortunately the TV coverage is very poor so we couldn't figure out the dynamics of the finale, such a shame as the race has a great line up in comparison to previous years
