Wow this is really bad news for Cycling fans in Australia.SBS did an ok job but channel nine will ruin it.They dont know a thing about cycling,or the riders, the teams or the sports rules.Mark my words "This will destroy the TDU for the future"If we get an half hour highlights package daily it will be a miracle"....Also agree Anthony Tan is a Moron>>>

Im not how it will make it any worse. Previously all we got was highlights packages of the first 5 days, and then live coverage of the last two.

Short of ditching highlights packages how can it deteriorate?

Read the comments of this article and maybe you and other non-Australians will understand why people are unhappy. Ch 9 are known for stuffing sport coverage up

IT seems rather stupid of the TDU organisers to sell the rights to a channel that has another sporting committment that clashes with the TDU. There is no way channel 9 will broadcast cycling instead of cricket and there is absolutely no way they should so don't crticise them for not doing so. Take aim at the stupidity of the organisers for doing this deal.

ONE is still sport? fooled me.

as long as sbs have he tour.

It isn't. Once ONE was taken over by James Packer it basically came an outdoors, documentary and crime show channel.

Ch 9 also has a nickname in Australia as 'Ch Nein', which for the non German speaking folk here, 'Ch No'.

It would actually be kinda cool for CH 7 to get it as then the great Bruce McAvaney (aka the best commentator going round) could commentate Cycling. He could use some of his catch phrases such as 'delicious' and 'SPECIAL' when GreenEdge do something good!!! :D

From the limited Rugby I have watched I do recognise some of those catchphrases from those Rugby commentators.

By the fact that you call it 'Rugby' tells us enough.

Thats not a criticism, it is what almost everyone from the Sothern and western states do. Rugby = Rugby Union, the game that the world cup was just for. What was being talked about with Gus Gould etc is Rugby League (refered to as just League or NRL), a different game.

And that end todays lesson. Tomorrow we will look at the differnce between a ruck and a maul... :)

It's unlikely to be live then, unless Cricket Australia blasphemously goes to Fox sports and that won't happen. No matter what, the decision seems to be a bit of a let down for the TDU.

According to law that can not happen. International cricket in Australia is one of the premium sporting events that must be shown of free-to-air telovision in Australia.

Thank goodness for that law, I seriously cannot stand Fox's commentary. I think it applies only to home matches, no?

Are the subsidiary/ sister channels of 9 also free, if so is the rights going to 9 that big a problem?

and in lesson 3 can we look at the difference between rugby (it's all the same) and throwing a ball in the middle of a small room filled with 3 year olds hyped up on energy drinks? pathetic excuse for a sport built around treating what proper sports call "fundamentals" as skills.

the sothern state.

Wow that was both cleaver and original
I suppose this is where I am meant to reply with something just as witty involving the phrase gAyFL... but i wont.

I have learnt to appreciate many sports. Just because someone’s favourite sport is different to mine does not make it a lesser spot. I have found that when I have taken the time to understand a sport I have enjoyed it... i may not love it, but I can appreciate it. The only sports I hate are the ones i have not learnt about. So if you cant tell the difference between them, then you have nothing to say about it.

Look it is all a bit messy atm. There was a list of sports, the legistion was to expire at the end of 2010 i think. That is when there were all those adds and the web site http://www.keepsportfree.com.au As far as i know the new legislation with the new list has not been passed and i think there is an interium agreement. They are still sorting out how to handel the multi/digital channels. In the past it was not allowed, however, more and more exceptions are being made. I think/hope that once the analog switch off is well underway that the will be more acceptance of networks being able to put sport on thier multi channels.

Info here: http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_91821

This is what it says about cricket (there is no mention of cycling )

I may be wrong, and won't have any hassle about some one saying I am wrong, but I'm possitive the last Ashes tour in Ingerlund was shown on Fox sports and not on free to air Nine.

As for channel 9 showing the TDU. Maybe if all Oz cycling fans email channel 9 and mention that they would prefer to see coverage moved to one of thier secondary channels and shown in full, and explain to Ch 9 it is not going to lose any viewership from it's main channel, but stands to lose a whole community if it's not done right.

It was on Fox and free-to-air. I do not remember which network, but it was on free-to-air because I watched it and i dont have Fox. I know the ashes tour before, 2005, was on SBS, because some of the play was interupted by the TDF. I also remember Fox's adds at the time, they showed a game of cricket being played then all of a sudden a peloton would ride though the game. It was kind of funny.

No one was going to pick up the ashes at the time (2005) and John Howard intervined and made sure it happened.

I'm not 100% sure how it all works, i think there is some loop hole because the French Open that Sam Stoser lost the final, was all shown on Fox, until the final. See because a free-to-air has to have the rights, Nine bought it then on sold it to Fox... but because an Aussie was in the final, they pulled the final from Fox and showed it themselves. It is all confusing.

Come on, he can often be irritating but are you seriously going to tell me that MCavaney doesn't know what he is talking about? Whatever sport he covers he knows his stuff about.

I'll grant you that he tries - remember that in the sports he has covered in the past he has had a lot of experience with them first - or has restrained himself to just filler commentary when he is knew to them.

But if he lobs into cycling I will vomit. When he says things like 'special', it just creeps me out.
