Tour Down Under (World Tour) Jan 21-26

Obviously this race suffers from living in the shadow of the forum-favourite San Luis perennial epic. But it does offer World Tour points, and it is easier to access coverage, so I thought I would start a thread now that teams are being finalised.

The route is pretty similar to last year’s route. They seem to have chopped and changed a few stages, but there are no major new difficulties from what I can see.

Of more interest is the riders who are going to race. Picking a rider to win is always difficult, as it is unclear which riders are there for training, and which are there for WT points. However, there are some very interesting selections. Gerrans will fancy his chances of at least a stage win, as he always shows up well here. Unsurprisingly, it seems Greipel will ride again. He will have to lock horns with Kittel this year, which should be interesting. Other interesting sprinters include Ferrari (LAM) and Renshaw (OPQ).

But it is the riders more traditionally associated with GC bids at Grand Tours that catch the eye. Evans is on BMC’s squad, Frank Schleck is pencilled in for Trek’s debut race, and Richie Porte has the chance to prove he is a leader early this year in what appears to be a very big year for the Tasmanian.

Others to catch my eye were AG2R sending Bouet and their cobbles squad. And Hansen and Bakelants are two interesting strongmen.

I can see Ulissi doing well in this, but I don't know what his form will be so early in the season, as he seemed to peak very late last year.

old willunga hill is always epic to be honest
also the crowds are huge

in my opinion there is very small chance gerrans to be dropped on the hill
i think frank schleck will podium, he's angry to race. i hope richie can attack too

Looks like an extra anti-sprinter stage this year compared to last?

Yeah, they have cut down the laps on the Sitrling stage because once you get past 3 laps of the circuit, you don't get any greater selection made but yes, the Tour Down Under is a bit more selective this year.

tommy v might go well if in shape first time for Europcar DU.

My eye is on Rohan Dennis thouigh to do well as garmin have always had someone lined up for this
Apart from Cam Meyer's 'lucky' win, I don't see what you mean. Of course they always have local favourites on their team, that's true.

Team Tinkoff-Saxo with the following rooster for Tour Down Under, in case you want it on the team presentation page.

Nicki Sørensen (Danmark)
Jay McCarthy (Australien)
Michael Valgren (Danmark)
Nicolay Trusov (Rusland)
Christopher Juul Jensen (Danmark)
Michael Kolar (Slovakiet)
Rory Sutherland (Australien)

Don't bother the official profiles don't tell you anything, just remember:

Stage 1 = ~2.5km @ 7% (steep mid) with 12km to the finish, 2-3% at the finish
Stage 2 = Usual rolling circuit and leg sapping uphill drag to the finish
Stage 3 = Corkscrew ~2.5km @ 8.5% (steep mid) and fast 7km to the finish
Stage 4 = Pray for wind
Stage 5 = Passo Wilunga
Stage 6 = Ceremonial circuit to celebrate the gruelling race

Note: The final circuit will be in a different location this year and will not feature the brutal Montefiore hill.

Thanks! That was pretty helpful! What's your opinion? Do you think any of the sprinters will make it over the hill at the end of Stage 1 to contest the sprint?
