Thanks to CN for the interesting article on the main page:

Chad Thompson, manager of the Kenda-5 Hour Energy team, was confused as to why his team was not even approached regarding an invitation, despite its title sponsor Kenda having inked a two-year deal with the Amgen Tour of California as a supporting partner.

"We received zero communication until the week of our training camp when we were told that our team 'did not meet the continental team invitation criteria'. We are not sure what that means and no one seems to know what exactly that criteria may be," Thompson said, adding that the team had a potential sponsor offering up six figures to the team if it was invited to the race.

"This same company would have invested in the event, too. So, we both lost there. We hope the company will become a sponsor at some point this year or next, despite not participating in Tour of California."

Really crappy way to treat Kenda team and the sponsor. Someone must think cycling sponsors for domestic teams just grow on trees or something.

Jelly Belly not getting an invite's a bummer. When the ATOC stopped at LA two years ago, they were the most outgoing team out of all the others. I got to hang out with Kiel Reijnen, Bernard Van Ulden, Jeremy Powers, Will Routley, Danny Van Haute, and came in contact regularly with Mike Friedman. Not sure what their direction with the continental invites were. I would have loved to see Jamis Sutter Home get an invite again, but it didn't happen. As far as the invites for the continental teams, I am not happy with the decisions. They could have done a whole lot better.

Jelly Belly has some of the best jerseys in the peloton

This always perplexes me, in that it shouldn't be possible for a jersey to look so cool with a bunch of jelly beans as the dominating design feature, and yet it does. I like the Focus bikes as well (I actually bought Kiel Riejnen's frame off eBay a year ago).

It's pretty hard to find a reason for ATOC to treat the domestic teams this way, especially when one of their major stated reasons for not seeking an upgrade in their race category was to invite the domestic teams. Kenda got shafted in a major way.

Same here :D loved it when they were in LA. I really wanted Jelly Belly to be in this year's tour because they have been doing early season criteriums here in california. It's great to see them riding/racing around with amateurs

I was hoping for their invite because they signed a Mexican rider for the season, and I was hoping to get the chance to meet him.

I am still stunned that Kenda/5 Hour and Jelly Belly were left off the list.

And that rule was changed about auto invites for UCI teams. Mainly because there should be 2 American divisions.

Wasn't there also word of a Brazilian team getting invited?

no I don't think so. brazilian teams don't like/have schedule/time to ride abroad very much. funvic will ride vuelta colombia though for the first time in history.

Funvic would have got an automatic invite under last years rules, but as said above that no longer applies to HC races.

SDSR today, uphill TT. Kenda gets 1st, 3rd, and 4 out of top 20.

ToC teams Livestrong, Exergy, Bissell, Optium all there... but got smoked.

Maybe Kenda should have paid for the sponsorship deal

They did. KENDA Tires just signed a big new deal with ATOC. They aren't happy about the exclusion. Hearing that decision came directly from the competition director without respect to money.

Other Kenda teams got in (Exergy) (?)

A key deficit for ToC and Colorado is that few of the US based riders can climb with the Euro Pro's. Now we have two riders on the same team who can. Granted they are not going to drop Horner but they would animate the race.

Ultimately they need to have 18 teams in the race. It would help the growth of the sport.

there's no ride in kenda tema that can follow the european climbers or even do a top ten gc here

With the exception of Horner, Levi, TVG most Euro based climbers ride the Giro. That leaves a huge gap like last year on Baldy, two guys and the rest just trying to survive

i agree Lance has zero relevance to this topic. However you cant deny that adding Bont-LS roster to this line up essentially gives the defending champ 2 teams in the race. On paper anyway.

Add another TT win for Gaimon today at Redlands (NRC 2.3)...against an even stronger field. That makes them 4 for 4 on the season in race openers.

Kenda has 3 in the top 10.

This is starting to get silly. The Competition committee needs to get back in the basement.
