With the rain it will be really hard to tell if it is snot and drool on Tony's face or just rain.

Hate these narrow, twisty descents. Can sometimes feel like you're going slower down than you were going up!

I'd go with a road bike...but nobody is so the trade off must be creep through the wet technical to take back on what's wide open

Road bike with aero bars, like the Cinque Terre Giro ITT from 2009, probably the best compromise, cos that out-and-back middle section is one where you'd want to be able to get into an aero position and drive for it.
