Why wouldn't a sponsor (who, Orica or Jayco) want more than one Columbian on the team?

And just how much control has any sponsor over any teams signing policy?
O.K. some sponsors may want a clean team.

I'm sorry, but I don't see the team management at GreenEDGE allowing a sponsor to say who they can or can't sign or even the nationality of potential targets.

I have this info from first hand. they said to chaves they only want one colombian for now. so no friend for him yet. also he was offered 3 year contract and I think he signed that, but I read everywhere 2 years. maybe they are still a bit afraid of his injury.

Ryo I'm not questioning your source, what I am questioning is the assertion that it was a sponsor and not team management that dictated the decision that only one Columbian would be signed.

I still haven't received an answer to my original questions.

And seeing as I am new to the wider world of cycling, what was the atrocious behaviour of the Australian teams at past editions of L'Avenir towards the Colombians?

While sledging is common in some Australian sports, I wouldn't have thought it would occur in cycling. What did Mathews and Hepburn say or do towards the Columbians, and why?

they said the sponsor only wants one colombian for now. maybe is an excuse but it could also be that they had too few australians in the team according to sponsor or that they really want only 1 colombian (for now)

Colombians complained of racist behaviour of the non-Colombian teams especially at the 2010 and 2011 editions. There was some bike-pushing, insult-throwing and fights on and off the bike. But they mainly blamed the French, not the Aussies, as far as I know.

The same. Things have not changed. This time we had problems with the French, the Australians and also Americans during the race, but we never allowed ourselves to be humiliated as they clearly wished had been the case. They didn't want us to be in the front of the peloton, they "brake-checked" us, they yelled at us, treated us badly, but we took them on and gave it right back. One day, a French rider grabbed Jarlinson Pantano's bike by the handlebar and threw him off his bike. So in retaliation, I went over and pushed this French rider into a ditch. In the end, however, it was him [the French rider] who asked us for forgiveness. At the end of that stage, the directors had to mediate the situation, so we wouldn't have any more problems. As the days went by, things calmed down. They saw that we were the strongest, and they learned to respect us.

same happened with italians in giro bio 2010. mainly it's just jealousy because they destroyed them so much

I can't believe people would do that to fellow cyclists. Unprofessional behavior. If you throw someone off their bike like that, you shouldn't be welcome back to any professional race. If I were one of the Colombian riders, I'd smash all their bikes to pieces so they had nothing to race on. Sickening.

the worst example of this is cavendish. he literally punched soler form behind in the back which made him crash in giro 2009 and caused tendinitis. after the stage cavendish wanted to look for him to beat him up. pathetic piece of ****

The Aussies did their fair share. However, in 2010, Neil Stephens tore into the team on the bus after one of the stages and nearly had Hepburn's OGE contract torn up for his idiocy at the 2011 race

Well Porte often has a day off in the GTs so I while he is a favorite for the Giro I wouldnt put all my saving on a Giro win for Porte, though his chances are much bigger with Nibali doing the Tour.

The advantage for Porte is that most of his Giro rivals are the same. They show weakness on some stages. He isn't racing Froome.

And how do you think the non Europeans were treated when they first went to Europe ? The Americans, Aussies and Brits said the same thing, it was sink or swim. No one likes newcomers turning up and winning local races or being competitive. It's part of sport. But if they proved themselves and hung around, they were accepted. Probably a lot worse in the seventies and eighties and before that.

Are they likely to get a decent international race calendar, or is Blythe seriously going to spend a year beating up domestic club riders?
