Sad end for Dominik Nerz - something was clearly wrong for the last two year. I wish him all the best in the future.
Anyone know what caused this?
No, but whatever the cause, that there is a problem has been obvious for a long time. He was signed by Bora to be their new GC leader after Konig moved on and then didn't even make their Tour team.
According to this article, it's health problems. He says he underwent "intensive medical examinations" that leave him no other option but to retire. Sounds quite serious.
Sad to hear and I hope his health recovers.

I'm surprised to not see Paul Voß in the 2017 squad - this was his best season so far, I'm curious were he will end up next year.
Especially when they re-sign Benedetti, who they left until the last minute to re-sign last season.
Benedetti was good all season, as an all purpose domestique and a breakaway guy. It's not at all surprising that he was renewed. As far as Voss is concerned, there is no chance at all that they didn't offer him a contract. The only possible explanations are that he signed elsewhere or he wanted a raise they didn't want to give him.

So now seems like a good idea to review the two (completely, at least) disappearing teams' riders. First...

IAM:

Marcel Aregger (SUI) → retiring (at only 25! Moving to England and pursuing an education)
Matthias Brändle (AUT) → Trek
Clément Chevrier (FRA) → Ag2r
Stef Clement (NED) → Lotto Jumbo
Jérôme Coppel (FRA) → retiring (at only 29! Couldn't find a new team)
Stefan Denifl (AUT) → Aqua Blue
Dries Devenyns (BEL) → Etixx
Martin Elmiger (SUI) → BMC
Sondre Holst Enger (NOR) → Ag2r
Mathias Frank (SUI) → Ag2r

Roger Kluge (GER) → Orica

Pirmin Lang (SUI) → Looking for a team
Oliver Naesen (BEL) → Ag2r
Jarlinson Pantano (COL) → Trek

Aleksejs Saramotins (LAT) → Bora
David Tanner (AUS) → Looking for a team, but is currently in hospital because of a bad training crash
Jonas van Genechten (BEL) → Cofidis
Larry Warbasse (USA) → Looking for a team
Marcel Wyss (SUI) → Looking for a team
Oliver Zaugg (SUI) → Retiring

Tinkoff

Erik Baška (SVK) → Bora

Evgeni Petrov (RUS) → ??
Paweł Poljański (POL) → Bora
Michael Rogers (AUS) → Retired during the season
Ivan Rovny (RUS) → RusVelo

Peter Sagan (SVK) → Bora
Matteo Tosatto (ITA) → ??

So IAM had four riders going to Ag2r, but Tinkoff has EIGHT going to Bora.

Tosatto and Paulino are not happy with Contador.

paulino said contador promised him a spot on the new contador team. then promised a spot on whatever other team he went to. then silence.

eventually when it had gotten too late to get a team (september) he became worried so he called trek who told him "contador never mentioned you". he says he understands not getting a spot, but feels that at least a phonecall to let him know would be the bare minimum from someone who's made promises and then not kept them.

a few other tinkoff riders were reached for comment on that. most didn't answer. the only one who said anything was tosatto who just said he went through the same with contador, then refused to elaborate

The only mistake Contador made is giving Hernandez a spot. Contador is the reason why paulinho is still racing the last 3 years of his life.

And that after paulinho betrayed him when they were in astana.

He should be grateful instead of talking *** about the man

Re:

This kind of thing is more or less inevitable when the star of a rider big enough to have his own entourage starts to fade. The rider makes promises based on his old standing, teams only let him stuff their roster full of not quite good enough friends on the basis of his current standing. Awkwardness ensues.

Exactly my thoughts

What should he say to Paulinho though. “Sorry pal I ain't got no option to guarantee you a contract at Trek. I just found out I only got one myself, because they want to attract Aru for 2018!“

Can't blame him for feeling ashamed tbh!

To answer your question, yes.

Why would Paulinho cry publicly over this? Contador is the reason he has had a job for at least 2 years now.
On the other hand, it seems kinda bad mannered not even to give him a call.
Like I said, they even trained together since then  why this obsession about a phone call?
Because he only found out mid september, which makes it harder to find a new team. Contador probably knew sooner that he couldn't take him to Trek.

What obsession? Lol. I just commented on what Paulinho had said, trying to be objective and see it from both sides. Something that you obviously aren't capable of when it comes to Contador.

Could you talk more about that?

He followed armstrong, i don't blame him, he looked after his own selfinterest.

But then don't be a hypocrite and give Contador *** when he just did the same

Yeah but they trained together after that, so clearly this has been blown way out of proportion. If Alberto really didn't tell Paulinho Trek refused to sign him, then yes, that's not great, otoh, in that case, why did Paulinho never ask him about it? Surely at some point he should have wondered why Trek hadn't contacted him?

The issue is not whether Contador could get a spot for Paulinho or Tossato ....

The issue is whether he told them to their face that is was not going to happen...That is the decent thing to do and what friends do ...they respect the other person and tell them the truth ...they don't avoid the issue because its difficult and leave the other person holding on and missing out on opportunities.

As for Contador keeping Paulinho in a contract for the last few years I am sure there was also something in it for Contador

Looks like Contador did not act well on this...kinda immature tbh

There are a few pro conti teams that might pick up Paulinho & Tosatto
