That’s what’s so interesting about the report. Movistar (a) are overly dependent on Valverde to bring in regular wins and (b) appear to be about to part company with a big section of their roster, both leaders and domestiques. I think you and I and some others talked about the oddness of a Bennett to Movistar rumour a few months ago. But maybe they really were looking to sign a top sprinter. They do need to sign a whole load of riders, so if they are going to shape themselves into a team capable of supporting a big sprinter, now would be the time.

Not only are they overly dependent on Valverde, they have admitted as much 3-4 years ago and have done nothing except become even more dependent on him. Yes this is the year for the team to make drastic changes if they want to. Personally I have thought this would be a great year to do a comprehensive rebuild of the team. Although I do expect them to resign at least 1-2 of Valverde's long time friends/helpers. One thing it does sound like is they intend on signing a bunch of young Spaniards from the Pro Conti and lower ranks. So not sure exactly what direction they are taking except to get much younger.

Ballerini certainly was a rider for their future. Especially with their shifted focus to build a classiccs team around Lutsenko and Fuglsang. Now they're all gone. They've cashed on Ballerini it seems as there was a deal rumored with Quick Step!
Reads as if Astana starts closing down if Martinelli can't come up with a new Italian sponsorship deal in 1-2 years!Stilletto said:

I really don't see why Carapaz would go to Ineos unless it's just a money thing which I assume it is. You just won a GT at Movistar which is losing Nairo and possibly Landa to go to a team with Froome, Thomas, Bernal, and rising talents in Sivakov, and Sosa. Ok, yeah Froome could be done as a GT contender but we don't know that yet.

Cycling is a short career and trophies don't pay the bills
Let's be honest all of us would be the same. If Company A paid x, but a Company B offered you 2x or 3x we all would choose the bigger pay cheque. Anyone that says otherwise is kidding themselves. He can take care of his young family, not have to really worry about money again live a very comfortable life and enjoy riding his bike with a Giro Trophy in the cabinet and a well padded bank account to fall back on when he has to retire and think about life after cycling

It's not Astana but Quick-Step that got an Italian sponsor, today during the stage Magrini said that a businessman called Monti (or something similar) will fund the new Quick-Step development team, Magrini himself will be the team manager and also named the entire staff so should be a done deal.

Sivakov and Sosa are helpers for now in GTs. Unless someone crashes, that was supposed to be the leader, right before the race and nobody else replace them as a leader. Which happened this year.
Froome, will he able to get back to his previous level? Or back at all. Who knows.
Thomas will be 34 next year. Does he have 1-2 years left before a looming decline/retirement? Who knows.
If Carapaz stays at Movistar. He will have Landa (?), Fuglsang (?) and Mas (?) or maybe some other rider we dont know about yet. Not to mention Valverde. They will surely send 2-3 of these riders to the same race in some combination.
Movistar and Ineos dont seem that different from that perspective.
I would have prefered if he stayed though, but that is looking unlikely now after the latest news.
