Travis Tygart - antidoping hero or chocolate teapot?

What's up with USADA? Appears they don't do anti-doping anymore? Just anti-lance conferences?

Farah says he was right to stick with his coach, Alberto Salazar, after hearing whispers that an investigation by the United States Anti-Doping Agency has been quietly dropped.

Farah faced intense pressure to leave Salazar’s Nike Oregon Project training group last summer after the BBC alleged that he had given the banned supplement testosterone to Farah’s training partner Galen Rupp as a 16-year-old, and committed other ethical violations, which Salazar denies. British Athletics’s chairman, Ed Warner, also advised Farah to suspend his relationship, while shortly afterwards Usada began an investigation into the Oregon Project.

Re:

taking this over from the LA thread.

The "stopped doping in 2006" line was an obvious lie and I think it would've been relatively easy to expose it as such. Tygart didn't do anything to expose it, though.
Instead he vouched for the truthfulness of the affidavits, which begs the question how he knows they were truthful.

"It took tremendous courage for the riders on the USPS Team and others to come forward and speak truthfully. It is not easy to admit your mistakes and accept your punishment. But that is what these riders have done for the good of the sport, and for the young riders who hope to one day reach their dreams without using dangerous drugs or methods.

"These eleven (11) teammates of Lance Armstrong, in alphabetical order, are Frankie Andreu, Michael Barry, Tom Danielson, Tyler Hamilton, George Hincapie, Floyd Landis, Levi Leipheimer, Stephen Swart, Christian Vande Velde, Jonathan Vaughters and David Zabriskie.

"The riders who participated in the USPS Team doping conspiracy and truthfully assisted have been courageous in making the choice to stop perpetuating the sporting fraud, and they have suffered greatly. In addition to the public revelations, the active riders have been suspended and disqualified appropriately in line with the rules. In some part, it would have been easier for them if it all would just go away; however, they love the sport, and they want to help young athletes have hope that they are not put in the position they were -- to face the reality that in order to climb to the heights of their sport they had to sink to the depths of dangerous cheating.

And how do you like this one:
"I have personally talked with and heard these athletes’ stories and firmly believe that, collectively, these athletes, if forgiven and embraced, have a chance to leave a legacy far greater for the good of the sport than anything they ever did on a bike.

Tygart also went on the record vouching for Hesjedal for no obvious reason:
USADA confirmed to Cyclingnews that Hesjedal had been interviewed by them and CCES. “As has been publicly reported, we can confirm that USADA, along with the Canadian Center for Ethics in Sport (CCES), interviewed cyclist, Ryder Hesjedal, earlier this year as part of our ongoing investigation into the sport of cycling," CEO Travis Tygart said. "Athletes like him and others, who have voluntarily come in, taken accountability for their actions and have been fully truthful, are essential to securing a brighter future for the sport of cycling.

And I'm proud of you for being probably proud of Travis.

But seriously, he's just a politician. He's after a few big names. When you look at what can be done with investigations, target testing, he's really done nothing. If you target test at any velodrome in N. America it would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Then, you get them to roll on their teammates.

what does a district attorney do in the leadup to election years?

theres ur answer folx

Of course he's politically-savvy, and of course he was highly motivated to make an example out of Lance, but the guy is definitely driven by a genuine belief in the righteousness of the anti-doping movement. I think this is an important point to emphasize and I base it on my direct experience with USADA over what you all know were years of cooperation.

As for Hesjedal, he was assisting USADA as far back as 2007, after his time on Phonak...

Tygart maybe motivated but look at Gaitlin! That aint anti doping.

Over two dozen people specifically pursued by USADA.

sounds like a conflict of interest as far back as 2007.

what was he telling them?

you're not seriously gonna maintain hesjedal was clean at phonak or in 2012 are you?
let's call a spade a spade: hesjedal doped hard throughout his carreer and lied hard when he was forced to 'come clean' in 2012.
Yet Tygart vouched for him.
Inexplicable, inexcusable.

I think Tygart has a conflict of interest with religion as well. Anyone who is openly Christian appears to get more lenient treatment than those who are agnostic. Mayweather and Gatlin the most obvious examples.

No, this is people who were sanctioned. I have a list somewhere but they start in 2007.

I said nothing of the sort. Just that he was talking to USADA as far back as 2007, iirc.

Never take the Americans seriously - Look at the FBI busting corruption at FIFA - Conveniently their investigation only started in 1995, a year after the USA held the 1994 World Cup - Miracolously FIFA corruption only started in 1995 - No way the FBI would investigate corruption around the 1994 World Cup held in the USA.

Huh? No other country every took interest in FIFA corruption until the FBI were investigating CONCACAF and Chuck Blazer (on a unrelated matter). They also uncovered bribes by Nike and other American companies. Most of the money was also laundered through the US banking system. With the USA in this one FIFA would remain as it was today.

When it comes to USADA you can safely say they've done very little in cycling and other sports, most certainly they protected the henhouse with USAC.

In the age of "transpency" the latest anti-doping catchphrase is: "xxxxxx does not comment on ongoing investigations".

Most convenient

I picked up on the that in relation to the Linda McCartney article on CN. Everyone who had been contacted by CN said they hadn't been contacted by UKAD apart from Team Sky on behalf of their doctor who was a "no comment".

If you want to kill speculation dead surely you say I wasn't contacted....................
