Fastest men ever at 100m.

9.58 Bolt
9.69 Gay
9.69 Blake
9.72 Powell
9.78 Carter
9.79 Gatlin

Bolt must be a complete freak of nature to be so much faster than all these known dopers, it's incredible if he is clean.
aggregation of marginal gains. simple

No it wasn't. Bolt vs human limits has always been the attraction. Gay has never been more than a blip. Blake has attracted far more attention in his brief stint as 2nd best than Gay ever did.
blake does great zombie celebrations. fairs fair. i prefer his zombie to bolts zulu dance or whatever it is.

I just heard Alison Curbishley on BBC one - an absolute joke and a disgrace.

Suggesting it was a single rogue stimulant in contaminated supplements.

Powell, Gay and Carter.

3 very big sprinting names.

After watching Ben Johnson in the 88 olympics I thought "Man people surely won't cheat after the scandal this has caught."

And then it turned out pretty much everyone in that final was doped up to the eyeballs.

And with the Festina affair - Well thought this again...

And then along came Lance Armstrong, and the rest of the peloton for at least the next 10 years.

People just love to cheat, don't they...

not really. regular people are just outsiders. doping is the norm. its not cheating.

It took two months from Gay was tested (ooc May 16) till the positive was announced, and less than three weeks for the Jamaicans (Jam. nationals June 21-23). Powell and Simpson says they were positive for oxilofrine. Gay's substance still not revealed.

Not familiar with Carter has he failed a drug test?

All depends on lab, processing, what they test positive for and how obvious it is. Riccò only took a few days from test to announcement of positive, whereas Eladio Jiménez took nearly four months.

Well, it is possible, supplements have been known to contain amphetamine like substances. It is only a few months ago that many a Norwegian and Swedish body builder and weight lifting freaks were going bonkers because they no longer could get their beloved protein supplement, with the innocent name "Craze", as it was found to contain amphetamine like substances. (Doesn't mean the Jamaicans and/or Gay aren't doping on purpose too. of course.)

If your a pro athlete you should be fine shopping at Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose, Sainsbury not some dodgy protein store.

He's one of the Jamaican's named alongside Powell today.

That list is pretty damning.

Yes, it didn't take very long for Santambrogio and Di Luca either, while Gabrovski took almost 3 months.

It will be interesting to know what Guy was caught for.

But people still want to see those sports. The 100m (especially the men's) is seen as one of the most prestigious events in the Olympics, and it comes with a level of glory and attention not afforded to, say, Kenenisa Bekele. And as long as there is fame and glory and doctors giving you stuff they think will give you an advantage, there will be people willing to go that extra mile.

Quite an interesting take on it. OK so I can remember Mary Rand winning and the coverage at the time being very jingoistic. My perceptions for what they are worth -

My first proper recollections of starting to think about how different sports were covered at the Olympics is Munich. There I don't think there was much difference in how various T & F events were portrayed apart from Hemery and Sherwood in the 400m Hurdles was the great thing. OK counter argument - certainly Mary Peters got very short shrift prior to the final couple of events. But I was very disappointed with the coverage Alan Wells gained in relation to Moscow. (Confession - I thought he was great and thought he ran clean - until I found out there was a connection with Angus Fraser - soigneur - 10 years later working with Chris Carmichael, injecting USA team Juniors with steroids without telling them what they were. Fraser - see Tour with Shane Sutton ANC.) At Moscow it was all about Ovett and Coe. The 100m was a side show for freaks.

The Ben Johnson Seoul Olympics made the freak show news and then we had Linford Christie. I have no idea what went on but suddenly the BBC was in lurve with the 100m for men, but the women were getting quite a mention as well. Then with Christie's downfall the BBC went "women's 400m" for Sydney. But by 2008 it was bonkers, worse than it ever had been for the 100m for men. The sexual discrimination male/female was more pronounced than at any time I can recall. Sue Barker and the drones sounded like they were on a sponsored talk show - how many times can we eulogise over Bolt. Remember the 2008 BBC Sports Personality and Bolt's international award ? Pass the sick bucket and when it's full, let's tip it over the producer's head.

I well remember the 2003 Int Spoty going to Lance and thinking, as the homages were paid, I dearly hope this ends up showering this bunch of morons in sh*t. (Travis I will forever be in your debt.) So where does that leave us ? Looking around for better journos and thankful of social media which provides better access to more information and fellow minds.

And journalists and "experts" shouldn't make up fantasy excuses. It is bad enough with the ones the athletes comes up with.

She's shacked up with Steve Cram the main beeb commentator. The role of TV in the maintenance of narrative and myth is bewildering. It is the main contributor to the corruption in sport.

I should have added Montgomery (9.78), Johnson (9.79) and Mullings (9.80) to the all time list, all of whom failed tests. Maurice Greene is the only 'clean' runner apart from Bolt to run below 9.84.
