Stage 1 of the Tour next year has 3,800 m of climbing and is 200 km long. If one of the UAE guys gets the yellow jersey on day 1, it'll be an "interesting" start to the Tour. Bora, Visma and QS might well like Yates or Ayuso to win and have the yellow jersey.

Yates says it will "be a bit of a challenge" - love the understatement!:p

"I think it will be good, I mean I think it will be a bit of a challenge," Yates said. "Last year, we had almost like the perfect team in a way, with the big guys, the medium guys and the climbers. So, next year will be a little bit different with a lot more climbers, but we'll see."

Yes, I like how he mentions that:

"Last year was super nice, everyone knew their role."

"The team we had last year was pretty much perfect in terms of the atmosphere and the personalities we had in the team. So it was super easy for us to get on."

When they won't give us peak Pogacar, the least they can do is give us lots of intra-team drama! It's gonna be a marvellous soap opera. Perhaps they're thinking that what Visma can do, we can do better. :D

Nice interview with Ulissi ( in Italian).

Thanks for sharing. For anyone who doesn't understand, Ulissi said he won't do any grand tours in 2024 and his main goals are Sanremo and Ardennes.

He can't be a leader in the big races, but the team thinks it will be a waste to send him to races just to pull. So, the focus of the season is doing lots of different races and accumulating points for the rankings.

For me it is a shame cyckling is like this, but I guess it gives purpose to a rider like Ulissi

But he will have a great chance to add some wins in one-day races and stages in some smaller races by the sounds of it.

Same for Covi: no GTs, smaller one day and stage races + Sanremo / Ardennes / Lombardia if in shape.
Hirschi did a similar calendar last year and collected a huge amount of UCI points. I guess this might be the new norm for good riders in super teams. Or riders who need a season to boost their confidence.

Luca Giaimi, 18yo, gets 6 year deal with UAE

“Surely – Giaimi smiles, at the opening in action to the last European juniors – such a long contract involves less stress related to the deadline, but I feel a bit the pressure to show that I deserved it. I was even offered it 8 years, but I chose to sign for 6. I am happy and I hope in the first two years to get as much experience as possible to get ready for the next four in the WorldTour. We started a nice path with different goals and to get to build the runner I want to be: this is one of the typical phrases of Matxin ».

Abu Dhabi is set to host the track WC in 2029 (which is the final year on Giaimi's contract).
I wouldn't rule out UAE signing a few other track super talents in the coming years.
So that they can promote the country in their own country?

Another nice interview with Wellens, where he is asked many questions about Pogačar, but okay.

“I think the team is very smart and when it comes to this challenge, they know what they’re doing. They’re not just doing it whatever."

It makes me a bit worried that he thinks he has to say it.

Why?

Nothing to think about imo. Interview is more for casuals and in general.

Yes, sorry, I should have put a smiley in there.

I'm not really worried or anything; it did make me think of Pogačar's comment this spring about UAE race recon: "Oh yea sure, we go to race not even knowing which one we are doing."🤣
