The rule is simple, race MTB and get ranking points = better starting positions for Championships. Everybody knows this.

World Cups are different, and that rule was introduced to encourage riders from other disciplines to race MTB, and they'd get a decent grid slot. I don't recall it ever applying to Worlds.......

Since winning at Lenzerheide in August 2019, he's ridden in just two XCO World Cups....plus his ill-fated Tokyo Olympics. Plenty of opportunity to race MTB......and chosen not to.
I've already had a work colleague suggest it is irrelevant anyway because he will stop halfway for a poo.

Rissveds crashed during warm-up and DNSed, no idea how bad it is. She has had lot of problems lately and was diagnosed with iron deficiency last week but seemed positive on Instagram today. What a shame.

Great racing anyway, I think Richards played it very well tactically, she looked cooked but managed to hold on the move in penultimate lap was very smart and it earned her the bronze. PFP super strong once again. Hopefully Puck will be able to challenge her more on Saturday.

On the men’s side I hoped for Schwarzbauer but Gaze was just too strong. Still a bronze medal would been nice I guess so the last corner hurt.

Luca left a gap on the inside; Tom decided he'd take it.....Nino has done something similar to Matthias, and vice versa....particularly at Lenzerheide last season.

PFP looks ominously in good form.....Is she going to ride away from everybody on the first lap on Saturday, again.

Sporza reports that MVDP will start not from the 5th row, but from the 4th.

I personally don't agree. Once again the UCI is doing what they're masters at, doing too little just too show they're doing something. The minimum acceptable to mitigate a bit the handicap MVDP has from being devoting himself to road racing would be to let him start in the front 2 minutes before the seasoned XCO pros. And, of course, to skip every section more technical that he is not used to face in road racing.

It's a new made up rule to suit the UCI; I seriously doubt the rider has requested it. Championships are gridded according to the recent UCI ranking. Simple.
World Cups are different, and allow for this. But this is the Worlds - riders ride in races to get points to ensure a better position.
