Don;t think this was a MTB issue; he wouldn't have won a Road or CX race.....the legs weren't there - and there is an issue, as he's not feeling great, and is lacking resiliance; to use his own words. I'm guessing the after effects of pneumonia he had in the Tour.....respiratory illnesses aren't fun, and for a sport like cycling can be a real problem.
Maybe...

EDIT: Sorry, today blew up on me!

Granted, we can't discount his illness and recovery, but I really can't seem him making the effort (on all aspects) to be at dirt worlds if he didn't 'feel' like he was ready.

I thought that once again, the coverage of the MTB Worlds was as average as ever; didn't seem to be much build up, no previews before the races, no post race analysis, etc All a bit 2nd rate, and commentary on TNT from a studio in the UK - not at the venue.......

I'll wait to see what Road Worlds are like - and compare/ contrast......

Not sure spreading the worlds out so much did it any favours, if I recall correctly Glasgow multi disipline worlds packed much more into a shorter timescale.
I doubt tv coverage will be much different, unless it's Warner promoted and they get their priority privileges they don't bother.
Not expecting presenter boots on the ground in Africa.

For you that follow MTB, the Crans Montana course looks grueling. Is it one of the more technical?

MVDP moved from his starting position up to 4th place within the first 5K being a meagre 7 sec behind the leader. Then followed a gradual decline from around 9K and on.

ps. very few riders on single-sided forks?!

last year with the rainy-muddy conditions it was very difficult and dangerous, this year it was quite fine. there are more technical courses during the season

I'll reply to myself here: I just read that MvdP said that he didn't feel his best during his build up so I guess that he was just hoping that things would come around on race day. Since he called it a year, there probably something to it. He also said that he still wants to win a mountain bike rainbow so...

BBC website/ Red button with coverage of women's Elite ITT - and men's will be live on BBC 2 this afternoon - and with their own commentary team. MTB really is the poor relation.......

At this level do riders like MvdP use different crank length from their road bike? Is shorter crank length a thing in elite mountain bike racers?
I remember a few years ago MvdP took some short breaks from knee and back pain issues that appear to be over

Great women's Elite race, a real 'ding dong' contest; and might have been more of a thriller had Pirellis' finest not let Evie down again, 2nd time in 3 races a big result has gone.
I recall a few WRC drivers criticising Pirelli for poor performing tyres.......I doubt we'll see similar from the Trek team.
