Froome19 said:Yes but the GC teams seemed to be adjusting to the race and I think they were suprised by how good Albasini was, he was miles better than anyone in the break and the GC riders could have saved energy and missed the sprint with no damage if it wasnt for Albasini's strength, you would have never put any odds on him for stage 2 before stage1 would you?
Before stage one, no I wouldn't have backed him. After giving him a 92 seconds head start, yeah I would have given him a chance, and said so at the time.
It was just so unnecessary.
Riders get in breaks because you never know what might happen, only this time we knew what might happen.
The Hitch said:I suppose the excuse is that there was supposed to be a major mountain stage to take back the time.
Its like imagine if the last 2 stages of the Alpes had been cancelled last year due to snow. Would people then say "oh they should have pulled back Voeclker on stage 9"?
There was, but there was also the very real, and documented possibility of that major mountain stage being altered/cancelled/shortened.
It's not as if it was a super strong break that would have required huge shifts to pull back either. 30 minutes of work from a domestique or two from a few teams would have been enough.
