What's the record for most GT stages in one year by one team? Fassa Bortolo had 17 and 16 GT stage wins in consecutive years

That 03 AleJet season has to be one of the most criminally underrated performances in cycling

So this years time was good but not incredible. There have been way faster times and being 16 seconds faster than Poels in a very early preparation race also isn't that great.

Most of tbe other times are from Vuelta's. This was fast. See Hazallanas 2015 for how fast it can go in prep races

Also Poels is a bad performance benchmark because he has among the widest performance ranges of any top pro. He can be one of the strongest climbers in the world or completely mediocre in a very unpredictable way.

Exactly. IIRC Poels won by a very large margin as well.

For reference, Mas de la Costa, the murito in last year's third week was done in 15.25 in the Vuelta and it was done in 15.36 in february by Quintana.

I suspect that Majka took the wrong approach to getting rid of Alaphilippe. By attacking in bursts and then slowing up he was using the standard approach to dropping someone who is less of a natural climber. But Alaphilippe is an Ardennes guy. Anaerobic efforts separated by brief recovery periods are in his comfort zone. On the other hand he probably can't TT up the mountain at Majka's pace and there's little benefit from drafting. Majka would have been better off trying to grind him off his wheel.

It's not a question of bad/good approach to drop Alaphilippe.
First of all after 3rd stage (Majka lost 2'35) there was no information about his stomach problems. And I'm not convinced there were any during next days.
Today, trying to win, he lost on a final climb ca. 1,5 minutes to the group of Nibali/Aru/Zakari/Poels.
He started Vuelta with mediocre shape and now he still doesn't have his best legs. Otherwise Majka wouldn't have any problem to drop Alaphilippe.

In future if you want to know climbing times go to climbingrecords.com (jens_attacks' site). The times are usually up no more than two hours after the race has finished.

How is the team competition counted in the Vuelta? Movistar being in the lead seems abit strange to me.

It is based on the sum of times of the 3 best placed riders in each stage (these can be different riders from day to day). Movistar have always had one or two riders in successful breaks, which is generally important for this competition.

The Tour and the Giro have the same rules. In the Tour there weren't many successful breakaways and Sky's win was mostly based on having Froome, Landa and Nieve close to the front in the mountain stages.
