Not a massive difference between Yates and Valverde

Krushweak and Mas biggest gains
Looks like the key was to recognize a section of the course where the most can be gained/lost.

Nice TT, would have preferred it 15 km longer to really hurt Quintana and Lopez, but they still need to attack. Question is if they can. Valverde should just ride defensively and hope Yates cracks.

Mini GC anyone?

General classification after stage 16
1. Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott)
2. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team) +33''
3. Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) +52''
4. Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) +1'15''
5. Enric Mas (Quick-Step Floors) +1'30''

Yates better than I thought he would be but not too many surprises with the GC riders. Dennis did the usual. Mas was impressive.

Kuss, Boom, Lindeman, Leezer, Bennett finished 153rd, 161st, 162nd, 163rd and 164th from 165 riders today. Seems that LottoNL-Jumbo have a bit of a plan for tomorrow then...

Finally only one choice for Quintana, He has to attack since there is not even the podium to save

He'll only attack if he can suck on Valverdes wheel all the way, but Valverde is gonna pop the rest of this race and be no good to NQ. This is the start of the usual Movistar meltdown. :D

If Yates stayes in red it would be marvellous. But if he is only 10-20 sec behind Valverde in GC, it also would be so opened till 20th stage (assuming none of them will crack).
What to say, I'm extremely happy! :D

I wonder how Superman feels about past tactical decisions right now

The messing about with Quintana on the stage Yates won did not cost him significant time. He went early and repeatedly on Covadonga, where there actually was the potential to take big time. His issue isn’t tactical it’s that he hasn’t been stronger than Yates.

Quintana has to go all-out tomorrow. I don't think he can wait until the Andorra stage.

And it has to be done before the final climb.

So because he's the 2nd best climber in the race and currently standing 5th or something means that he's riding tactically solid?

No real surprises here except SK. And maybe Mas.
Xwijk is no surprise. Massive 3rd week specialist.

Too bad the mountains here are not diesel enough

No surprise at all. He was looking better on the previous climbs. Race is still up for grabs.

But he's the worst TT-er. That's why he's 6th

Best career non-MTT ITT result, first time doing really well in his second GT of the year.

He ain't got it.
Still better to risk it all than getting 6th in the Vuelta for a champion like him.

An attack on the third last climb with at least two Movistar riders up the road. Suicide attack or not, it doesn't matter at this point. He can't outpace Yates on a MTF.
