Wallays owes a lot of thanks to Bystrom there for the last 1.5k pull

Yes he does, and not only that but Bystrom at least had the sense to get on his horse with about 300 meters to go and saved Wallays's bacon, giving him a perfect lead out. Otherwise this would have been Sagan's stage for sure.

That was very unexpected, especially considering the fact that the sprinters didn't have that many sprint opportunities in this Vuelta and they threw this one away.

Yeah it’s so weird how riders will risk the chance to win a GT stage leaving it up to someone else to do the work. Doesn’t work most of the time

Sagan could still theoretically win the points competition but it depends on how Valverde does the next 2 stages.

"Grand tour stage winner" is a pretty big deal for most of these breakaway guys, I guess, whereas "close second in a GT stage" is pretty meaningless...

Edit: according to Sporza it was because Quick Step DS Van Slycke said "where is Wallays going" (in a condescending way(?)) at the beginning of the stage.

So no biggie.

I've noticed that Van Asbroeck seems to be in very good form but he sucks at positioning.

Chapeau Jelle & Sven Erik! Held off Sagan & QS led peloton. What were they doing in the peloton?
