Expected better from Saimen Yates

Me too - going from his TdPoland form. Jack Haig finished 5 seconds in front of him so something went wrong!

Uran was up there at the finish so he seems to have recovered form Tdf, but poor ol' LRP - 14 minutes back after 2 stages.

Simon said he isn't going for GC, probably that's the reason. He wants stages. His time will come.

Yates isn't going for GC?

Well that makes this a boring Vuelta then.

From M-S website:
Mitchelton-SCOTT will continue its general classification development of the Yates brothers, with three-time 2018 Giro d’Italia stage winner Simon Yates targeting an overall result.

He says he will do the best he can, without much apparent conviction that that will include competing for victory (Video on page).

Boom and Duval were four seconds inside the time limit.

Quite a tough start to the race.
Boom had intestine problems. There was a twitter video of him going into a camper from the public to take a #2 break

Poop break & crash!

A remarkable day for @lars_boom today in stage two, with stomach problems, a crash and a fight against the time cut. More luck tomorrow Lars!

It appears that Quintana and Uran are the only ones actually saying they are definitely going for GC. Most are saying they aren't. Then of course we have Valverde who keeps saying two different things at the same time thus making everyone try to decipher what he's actually planning on doing.

However on the Valverde note, the Spanish national coach has more or less confirmed that Valverde and the Izagirre brothers ARE going to the Worlds. He said he's really hoping Valverde is only going stage hunting and is going to keep something in reserve for the Worlds. Then said, well this is Valverde we're talking about and we all know he's capable of doing what no one else can manage when it comes to holding form and winning or getting results yet also holding enough in reserve for other goals he's got.
