Vuelta 2024 discussion

With Remco, Jonas and Pogacar all very likely (more or less confirmed) not participating, this edition will be one of the more open races. In this season in particular, thats somewhat welcome after Mathieu and Pogacar basically dominating every major race so far. The route is amazing, so we should more or less be guaranteed a great race.

The route can be found here.

I will be updating this thread with riders who are confirmed to take part and who are likely to take part. I have not really been paying that much attention, so my hope is you will help me keep track, so this first list is more of a 'draft' than anything really. Note that some riders below "confirmed" might therefore not necessarily be 100% and riders below "likely" might have already confirmed it, so we can help eachother out instead and keep track of it:

Confirmed:
Enric Mas
Sepp Kuss
Mathias Skjelmose
Mikel Landa
Adam Yates
Joao Almeida
Brandon McNulty
Isaac Del Toro
Jay Vine
Valentin Paret Peintre
Ben O' Connor
Cian Uijtebroeks
Felix Gall
Nairo Quintana
Einer Rubio
Lorenzo Fortunato
David Gaudu
Max Poole
Filippo Zana
Lennart VE
Primoz Roglic
Aleksandr Vlasov
Dani Martinez
Florian Lipowitz
Max Poole
Mat Riccitello
Antonio Tiberi
Carlos Rodriguez
Thymen Arensman
Laurens de Plus
Tao G. Gart
Giulio Ciccone
Richard Carapaz
Louis Meintjens
Guillaume Martin

Other notable riders (non GC):
Josh Tarling
WVA
Pavel Bittner
Kaden Groves
Bryan Coquard

Shoot!

People opinion on Ayuso going or not gonig? I know the vuelta boss said he will go. I have this feeling he wont go and UAE are punishing him and that he will leave the team on a buyout maybe.

Feelings will Ayuso ride the Vuelta yay or nay?(if not beacuse UAE sending a message to him/punishment and nothing else) Curious what ppl think on that matter in general.

Roglic does the same crap every time with these injuries, he's going to limp to the start looking a bit sheepish, someone asks him how his shape is and he says 'ahhh yah err not too good ehh we will see' then he puts about 20 bike lengths into 2nd in the first weird ass uphill sprint he sees.

I am surprisingly bullish on Mas in this Vuelta, his leadup has been similar to 2022 with the caveat that he looks in much better form towards the end of the Tour than he did then. I think they recognised correctly that he didn't have a prayer at GC irrespective of shape given the field, so he came in cold and used it as training with the view to maybe getting a win in the third week. He might've had at least 2nd on Couillole if him and Carapaz didn't decide to spend the entire time ****ing around but he did look good on the pedals throwing some haymakers. Will have a decent looking team with Nairoman and I assume Rubio/Pelayo at least.

If anyone wants a 500/1 outsider for a breakaway stage win then write this name down in your little diary; Sylvain Moniquet. 0 career wins at 26 but he's low-key flying and knew how to get into the moves last year, this time he will have the form to finish it off. Just go with me on this one ok.

If you could kindly predict the stage he will win so we can stick £50 on it and get huge payouts would be great

Didn't UAE boss said he is not going? Something in the line that they have enough good riders to challenge Vuelta.

Egan Bernal
Carlos Rodriguez
Laurens De Plus
Felix Gall
Thymen Arensman
Einer Rubio
Simon Yates
Tom Pidcock
Matteo Jorgenson
Santi Buitrago
Derek Gee

What do we do with these guys?
I feel Bernal has been overraced these last two years, I don't see how adding Vuelta adds any value to his current condition.
Rodriguez and Gall both had quite a rough final week, I very much doubt they'd be in shape, Jorgenson and Gee both went quite deep and also were on a high level in the Dauphine already, I doubt they'll be able to carry on.
Yates form was going up so he might be a good shout, I guess Arensman right now might actually Ineos best shout as weird as that sounds? Pidcocks plan was to focus on the Olympics, I guess Vuelta could be an add on but not in GC form.
No idea what to make of De Plus, Buitrago and Rubio.

What do we do with these guys?
Egan Bernal: No. Overraced
Carlos Rodriguez: In
Laurens De Plus: Out. They just want to take other riders.
Felix Gall: In
Thymen Arensman: In
Einer Rubio: In
Simon Yates: In
Tom Pidcock: 100% Out
Matteo Jorgenson: Out
Santi Buitrago: In
Derek Gee: Out

If I didn't put the reason is just a gut feeling.

If Remco and Pogi and Jonas miss out, it could finally be a very exciting GT for a long time, with many riders hoping to finish on the podium. Accordingly, the race could also become more unpredictable, because nobody is “afraid” of overpowering opponents. At the Giro, everyone realized that Pogi was stronger and didn't even try. At the Tour, too, it was the 3 top riders and then the helpers. Also the Vuelta last year and the Tour last year. The Vuelta could finally be the close, exciting race that everyone had hoped for in a GT. At least it is currently very difficult to predict which three riders will end up on the podium. I'm looking forward to it.

Usually those scenarios result in a cagey and boring race because everyone thinks they can do something big and nobody wants to risk discovering that they can't. Recent Giri being good examples.

Enric finding them Vuelta legs. Movistar bringing their A game with Oliviera, Nairo, Rubio, and Pelayo Sanchez.

IPT have just Riccitello and Teuns… any room for a former 2 time winner and 7 time GT winner???
