Anyone have sufficient encyclopedic knowledge about ITTs to cite some comps - average kmph on similar length and profile ITTs?
On twitter it was mentioned that this was the fastest long ITT (>25km) since 2008. Roglic's ITT was the 2nd fastest since then. Ganna and Van Aert are the next 2 on the list in the WC last year. But all 3 are more than 1 kmph slower. Not sure if there were quicker ones before 2008, or if the account couldn't be asked to check earlier.

I’d say Vingegaard would have beaten Van Aert or at least been on a par if he’d needed to.
I'm sure he'd just open a new can of watts and descending skills and turn the the momentum of the past 25km around just like that.

Vingegaard was only faster in sector 1. In every other sector, Van Aert was faster.

Sector 1 = - 8.5s
Sector 2 = + 1.4s
Sector 3 = +5.8s
Sector 4 = + 20s

A moment before he nearly crashes (at 2.5k from the finish) and is obviously still going all out, he was already behind by 6 seconds. After his near-crash he eased off and didn't want to take any extra risks, so he lost an additional 13 seconds in the last 2.5k.

Congratulations to Remco Evenepoel for winning his first GT stage.

It's rare to have such long and flat ITT in a GT race. It was enjoyable to watch. A lot of cyclist did good today and after half of Vuelta picture is getting clearer. On who the teams will back for GC and who will go for other goals. Evenepoel went all in and won with style. Wearing the leaders jersey. And socket. He had to do it or his family would boo him. Roglič paced himself well and rode a good TT today. Looks like he is finding the right form at the right time. Although he lost some time i feel that he was smart not to blow himself up in the first half of the Vuetla. Moving up in GC with now only Evenepoel being ahead. Mas in my opinion did a good TT although he wasn't all that happy about it. Dennis might not feel the best but more likely he intentionally didn't went all in. As there will be a lot of work involved in stages to come.

Considering Roglič will target Evenepoel and Mas will likely try to move up. Considering a lot of youngsters and more seasoned cyclists would like to get to podium or to win a stage. And considering the second half of Vuelta will be a whole different beast.

I feel that some great racing still ahead for us to enjoy.

Well, Ganna set a Giro TT record in the 2020 Monreale-Palermo stage at a staggering 58.8 kmph, albiet on a course half as long at 15.1 km. Moreover, it was the opening stage, with a long and blistering downhill section, but with a short, stff rise to the finish, upon which he was pushing like 570 watts. On a flat, 30 km course midway in the race, with significant climbing prior, he doesn't go that fast, which I think puts Remco's performance in perspective.

I can't recall any previous, flat TT of 30 km during a GT over the past 15 years or so, in which a rider went over 55 kmph. Maybe prime Cancellara? If you go back to Armstrong, Ullrich to Indurain at the Tour, I think on flat TTs you'll find rides in the 52-53 kmph range, albiet on 50+ km courses. Naturally some research would be required for accurate statistics.

PCS has a "Fastest Time Trial" statistic with adjustable length

so according to that, Vuelta 2005 was the last major time trial this quick. It was also slightly downhill for most of the day

probably, but not sure the young guns are really better. Difficult to put their low level results into perspective. I mean, even a 4th place at the Spanish National Championships meant getting beaten by three no-names.
Woah, be careful what you say about the great Raúl García Pierna. That kid is really talented, and certainly not worthy of being called a no name. He will be one of the carriers of the next Spanish generation. He's not on the level of Juanito and Carlitos, but he'll be a name to remember. Juan Ayuso is all too familiar with getting beaten by the Kometa rockets.

RGP is part of a group with the likes of Igor Arrieta, Enekoitz Azparren, Ivan Romeo e.g. who will fill the gap left by Pello Bilbao, Ion Izagirre and Jonathan Castroviejo. Fun fact, Raul's nickname is El Gordito, because he was just freaking fat. And with fat I don't mean he had some visible baby weight. He was borderline obese. Google it, trust me.

What a performance by Remco!

Side note: It seems to only include the winner of a given race. Roglic actually would stack up very well as well, even though he was way behind Remco. But he is not on the list it looks like.

Yes we disagree. And particularly on all of the above.

Hindley’s ride was 5 minutes. Not why I watch for three weeks.

Landa is definitely third tier.

Carapaz may creep into second tier.

None of the above would ever be considered real contenders in any other era when there was more ITT.

I would also have Carapaz in 2nd tier (with e.g. Hindley, Thomas, Bernal, Mas, S. Yates,....)
3rd tier could be Landa, Vlasov, Gaudu, M.A. Lopez, Bardet, Almeida, O'Connor, ....
1st tier, Pogacar, JV, Roglic

For a lot of riders it's kind of fluid and they could easily be moved up or down a level I guess.

Carapaz is a guy with a bigger palmares than his class actually is. And I don't mean that disrespectful. But he's archived a Giro d'Italia victory, Olympic gold and a Tour of Switzerland win. Hats off. He never was 1st tier though. He just incredibly good at taking chances, which is a quality obviously.

You’re missing someone…

Yea, while some guys are missing cos I simply couldn't cos I simply couldn't remember them, Ayuso, Rodriguez or Evenepol I didn't include since they haven't had a decent GT result. But I guess if they finish the Vuelta where they are ranked now it's 2nd to 3rd tier for them, with the possibility to move up very quickly.
