Late developing is about the last thing I'd call McNulty. He was of mythical levels as a junior, on par with Adrien Costa, and contending in high level, one week stage races as a teenager / early 20s with the relative small program of Rally/UnitedHealthCare. Lack of opportunity and one too many flaws in his game, being that of inconsistency, is what I would point at for his ''failure'' as a GT GC threat.
He was never on par with Costa, but according to Knickman, he was supposed to be on that level.

not that he'll be a contender for the top spots, but Castrillo +0:29 said he's going for GC as well.

What the hell? I was not really aware how McNulty looks like. But I wouldn't have thought like 45, when he is 26
You need to spend some summers in Phoenix, Brandon looks great!! The slogan for greater Phoenix is valley of the sun..@130-135 in direct sun easy!! Another suburb is called Sun City everyone there 80+ years old!!

I hadn't thought about Costa in a long time until about a month ago. What an amazing talent he was coming up. No shame that he wanted off the pro cycling grinder. Even with his accident, he seems to found happiness in his life. Good for him.

Kung must be tired of finishing top four in TT's. A few flops with the GC riders. Some of those riders have probably gone to the race only looking for stage wins anyway.

Everyone except Vine at UAE (including the DS) got a 500 CHF fine for " Non-authorized jersey" during team presentation.

That's Indurain's legacy to pro cycling. The only rider of this type to actually win a GT in recent times was Tom Dumoulin.

To be fair, flat ITT's aren't 50km+ anymore. So it is getting harder for those TT specialists. Lately there wasn't hour of truth but more like half an hour ;)

Lenny VE comes in with the same time as GC Kuss ... 53 seconds down, but it's early days still.

Actually incredible how strong McNulty is. Look at Küng who’s 14kgs heavier, prepared particularly for this stage 1, and still did not have a chance. Tells us a lot about McNulty, who’s probably in perfect shape, and probably will climb with the best in this Vuelta.

2006 TdF with its ITTs was tailormade for Ullrich, 2012 was tailormade for Wiggins. Only Wiggins benefited however.
2007 Tour de France favored Evans & Leipheimer as well instead of Rasmussen & Contador with 117,4 kilometers of TT!

Yes… But, (peak) Contador‘s TT was underrated. I‘ll never forget how he beat (almost beat?) Cancellara at Annecy in 2009.

Contador - handsome face, and iron willpower. Rode TdF mountain stages with broken tibia.

IMO yes and no. It's always seemed to me that he has the ability to stay with tier 1 for a few stages but not for a full GT worth of climbs. Hope I'm wrong though.

Contador and Evans were pretty even in TT's usually.... as for Rasmussen................if the TT was a little longer Leipheimer would have won the overall before losing it again with a DSQ.
