Just to add some spice to the Ayuso vs Almeida rhetoric. Why on Earth does UAE have number 1? There seems to be no merit and no pattern in the order of bib numbers.

Primoz didn't want it. Who else were they going to give it to? Ben O'Connor? Why on Earth does UAE have number 1? There seems to be no merit and no pattern in the order of bib numbers.
I always got it from early registration!!Why on Earth does UAE have number 1? There seems to be no merit and no pattern in the order of bib numbers.
Presumably UAE let Ayuso have number 1 on the grounds that he's Spanish and Almeida isn't. However, this was obviously a mistake. They should have given it to Marc Soler. Just imagine the Solerismo we'd witness if he was wearing número uno on his jersey.Just to add some spice to the Ayuso vs Almeida rhetoric.
He was WC though, that has happened many times.Valverde wore no. 1 in 2019 when Simon Yates didn't defend his title.
So is Ayuso #1 and Almeida #8? Lol…
Simon Yates had the #8 of his team for the Giro, so it doesn't necessarily bring bad luck.So is Ayuso #1 and Almeida #8? Lol…
In other words, the race is missing, Pogacar, Froome, Quintana, Thomas, TG Hart, Roglic, S Yates, Carapaz.Vingo
Kuss
Hindley
Bernal
Are those the only GT winners in the race?
Danish aligned vs Ayuso aligned strategies at play?
When the winner isn't there, they can give it to whoever they want.Surely "Danish aligned" would be to give Bjerg #1...
Why does UAE have #1 anyway? Sure, last year's winner - Roglic - isn't riding, but wouldn't it usually be Bora who got it? Or the best placed rider - O'Connor - from last year?
Or even just... the first team alphabetically?
When the winner isn't there, they can give it to whoever they want.
Last year, Pogacar won the Giro, and this year, Roglic wore the 1
Its set up for Campenaerts to to deliver another set of heroics with the unlucky number thirteen. When the winner isn't there, they can give it to whoever they want.

Damiano Caruso is out of the race for Bahrain Victorious after he fractured his hand slipping over "accidentally" on the floor this week, and is replaced by Finlay Pickering. Ben Turner, meanwhile, joins Ineos Grenadiers after Lucas Hamilton fell ill.
You’re right, when a writer uses quotes in that way it suggests that there’s another explanation than the one offered. But if this is a translation they might have wanted to repeat the original quote verbatim.Already mentioned above, but... GODDAMMIT, Damiano!
Concerning use of quotation marks there. Are they implying he did it on purpose?
"No! I don't wanna!"
I'm hoping for something wild and unexpected. Jonas is fatigued after the Tour and loses five minutes on the first mountain stage to Ayuso, Almeida, Bernal and Ciccone. Ayuso and Almeida take each other out in week 3 in an argument over who gets which domestiques. Ciccone loses 30 seconds after a bungled sunglasses throw. Bernal wins his third grand tour...How many Visma and UAE guys in the top 10? A lot I reckon!
Hopefully someone without a contract for next year does the ride of their life and lights things up. Either that or UAE/Visma try to give away the leader's jersey and mess things up. If not, it'll be a two speed peloton with UAE & Visma filling our TV screens for the next 3 weeks.
