So apparently there's no longer such rule. I did read it on several websites (http://www.nieuwsblad.be/article/detail.aspx?articleid=GAQ2VEJOI for example). The WC in Ronse 1988 (the one with Bauer-Criquielion ->Fondriest) for example carefully avoided all cobbles (what was quite a challenge over there)
I tried looking for it, but I could't find any WC with cobbles held since the 70s...

That's why I say there doesnt seem to be such a rule anymore, but apparently there used to be (since I can't find an example of cobbles used in the last 45 years).

Now let us have a WC in Geraardsbergen please :D
