Cav talked to him, didn't like HH saying what he did, HH retracts the harshness from his comments, at least that's what I read... seems fairly straight forward.

Having someone apologize in person can often change one's opinion. Maybe he sensed Cavendish's sincerity. Also likely Cavendish read the same article that we did and felt that the time was right to hopefully put the entire incident behind them with a personal apology. I think more of him for making the effort.
