I like descenders that can climb well(usually sprinters are better descenders, but since they can't climb I don't care about them)

The best descender in the world is one of the best climbers.

Talking about Nibali I suppose?

I don't know if I would call him the best descender, but he's good yes. But since it's impossible for me to watch the Giro(exams at university), I haven't seen him all that much in action.

edit: you're talking about Samu Sanchez I think xD

I agree with Hitch. How many riders can climb (long or short hills/mountains) and sprint. You can watch this type of riders form classics to GTs. This type can perform almost everywhere.

That's a piti for me, that he can't race right now, when he recently had the best performances of his career. It's unfortuned to ban him this long time after the affair. I would prefer if any remove him form results at the time when Basso had ban.

fixed it for you.

Nibali i guess you can add him to that list. But i meant the one and only Samu.

ps jens. Your post should have read like this

Your defense of Basso, Vino, Di Luca, Ricco, etc on these boards is legendary.;)

well just like the badger said:"tant que je respire,je defends les dopés".

just to be on topic,i really like that type of rider who can slaughter the peloton on the mountains while working for his team leader:szmyd, navarro, beltran(legend 2003 alpe d'huez),chechu.

My favorite races are Flanders and Roubaix.

Tchmil
Duclose Lasalle
RdV
Museeuw
Tafi
Van Petegem
Magnus
O'grady
Boonen
Cancellara

Tough dudes for hard races.

I chose the stones, too. My favorite moment in cycling usually comes about 2/3 of the way through Flanders or PR, when it's just a handful of the above mentioned guys without anyone else to hide behind.

Anton, Txurruka, Ricco, Rasmussen, Pellizotti.

Riders who make good TV entertainment on mountain stages.

Other than that i always cheer on Evans for the GC. Probably because i too strugle on the highest mountains :D

Pure sprinters... nothing like a good old-fashioned drag race to the line.
Also, they tend not to get caught up in Clinic material, so they're easy to have faith in.

i'm not sure samu is the best at descending.
He hasn't really flown down any hills in the past couple of seasons.. not like he used to anyway.

the most amazing riders are the pure sprinter : they received a gift from god
And i love the sprinters on track

by the way, Freire is a truely pure sprinter , he could make a gap on 20 meters He has a tremendous jump

very different were Cipo and Petacchi who are powerful but need teams to create great acceleration during 5 kms in order to "kill" the sprint

I still have a soft spot for Gartzelli, after watching him drive hard up those climbs in "Remo" and the like, pure joy to watch.
Txruka's (spelling) still a fave too
And I like Valv'
Used to enjoy "Glen Close stylee" too and glad he's back, shame he might not be with Luiqi' tho'
Love the Strade' sections in the Giro, hope they return soon. and this years had to be the Best one in a very long time.

I like the riders who show something on their faces - the most expressive ones. Probably stupid, I know, but I like to see the emotion - the effort, and yes, the pain. Animated riders, I guess. That's what drew me to watch cycling in the first place - watching Vino's face/body language in the muddy Giro.

Without animated/emotional/expressive riders I may as well be watching computer generated avatars race. No fun.

+1. That's not stupid at all, you're right. :)

It's one reason why I used to like watching Duclos-Lasalle, Lemond and Kelly and Gilbert nowadays. You can root for them because they suffer visibly.

OK, so maybe it's a bit sick... :D

Valverde can be quite the attacker though. He was part of the group that formed the echelon at Paris-Nice, he forced the selection in the first stage of País Vasco, he charged off alone on Mont Ventoux to bridge to the break in the Dauphiné last year, he made and met every winning move in Romandie bar Spilak's. He does wait around for his sprint a lot, but often that should be the onus on the other riders to try and drop him since he will beat them in a sprint. Apart from Cunego, I can't think of any GC/hilly classics specialists who would think "yea, I WANT to take it to a sprint with Alejandro Valverde".

Sammuel Sanchez did it a few times some years ago. But then he got a better GC-contender and lost some of his finish ability the same time...

I don't know if this category was mentioned-but i think is valulable too:

"The Break away Artist" = most French riders+Barredo

At first, I read this as included in the "Attackers" category, and thought Hoogerland was a strange choice for that designation. But--my confusion aside--I agree. Break-away guys really excite me.

Stéphane Augé (below, on the right) comes to mind as a less-celebrated example of the French attacker. I've always liked him, and hope he has a few more years left in his legs. (Unrelated: The bike in the bottom pic is pretty much my dream ride.)
