Case: catch the doper - When best test during a 10wk altitude camp?
Picture it. Bear with me please. This is not hypothetical.
I am a national level athlete with Olympic ambitions. No job, just sponsors. My name is mentioned in a Spanish blood doping investigation. Evidence was collected, but I am denying everything, and send out fake threads by a fake lawyer to everyone who writes badly about me. My national sports union is doing what they can to cover things up, but the press just won't let up. My name is all over police reports. But you know the Spanish...
I have a big championship race this November, and until then I'm off to some altitude training in the USA. 10 weeks of it.
They got Jeannie Longo. Or actually, they didn't. Strike 3, she's out!
So let's say I am one slippery athlete to the testers. My foot prints are covered in circumstantial evidence. Bad connections, dopers as ex lovers, friend and former client of Stefan Matchiner, my leaked emails telling a friend of my EPO doping abuse in the newpapers could not be verified as legal evidence.
One thing is sure, I am not going to show up to a race and test positive there. It never happened before even when I was really fast, so little reason to expect I'll test positive in any race in the future. Waste of resources almost to test me.
I have lived in Spain to train and enjoy the sunshine and great food. I go to the US mountain to visit loved ones and work at altitude. More than 2 months on end. I race only a bit, between long absences in Spain and US, basically.
When am I best to be tested, to help keep me honest? Preferably every day of the long training camp, but that's not viable. Let's say my national anti-doping agency wants to take me serious, and commission 3 unannounced tests abroad. USADA seems accomodating?
How would these be spread over a stay of 10 weeks?
Another thing is sure. I am not going to use any PEDs and be found at my pre-entered whereabouts. If you can find me, I will be clean as a whistle. Just hope I won't be visited when I happen to stay at another address unexpectedly and fail to update my whereabouts. No-one wants strikes behind their name.
When would you test me, if you're targeting me? Is 3 tests a lot for 10 weeks abroad, or barely a serious effort?
Can testers take blood each time? Would be interesting to know especially HC 8 weeks in, 2 weeks before flowing how to sea level, perhaps? To compare with the race test data.
Thanks so much for your insights, you're the best!
