Let's try this....

My opinion is that if you are a rider that needs this superlight wheelset, you are not buying it- you are getting paid to ride it.

This leads me to my next point: Do those of you with equipment way above your ability level ever feel silly that you have it? I most certainly would.

And finally, I noticed the OP posted the price of something in Pounds Sterling, which leads me to believe he lives in England. Are their mountains in England of which I am not aware?

Well old boy, to answer your post - no I don't feel silly riding my very expensive bicycle with state of the art wheels, it's an absolute pleasure - you might try it sometime!

Sometimes it's better not to presume, I actually live in Portugal where they have a very big mountain, the road goes up to a height greater than most of your Swiss climbs I think you'll find. I rode it 2 weeks ago in 37 degrees of heat and out of 50 (or so) of us was first to the top!

Was that because I'm superfit or just that I have a very light, stiff, aero bike? I guess we'll never know, but I love riding my bike...

Many thanks to everyone for their constructive insightful posts. After all that I might save the money and take the family on holiday to England instead, I'll get some next year!

you can always vacation to Switzerland, ride to Eurotrashes house, and challenge him with his 50 lb bike up any climb.:D

Yeah, I'd definitely have to make the purchase for the special occasion though!

Holy Sh!t. You WON a club ride climb?! Never mind, I take it all back, you are surely worthy of only the best equipment.

I don't think I am jealous as some of you suggest, just sad that the sport I grew up with has changed so much. I remember the local club rides were full of working-joe hard asses on modest equipment who would still tear your legs off, and now I can't find one that spends more time on the road than in the cafe and most of their bikes cost more than those working-joes' cars.

Actually, I thought my last comment about banging that guys wife would surely get me banned from this forum. Either the mod hasn't read these yet or you guys aren't the bunch of pu**ys that I took you for. My bet is that he just hasn't read them yet.

I was reading, to be honest I let it go for a bit so you could stick your foot in your mouth a little further to show everyone how utterly lame you are. Ask and you shall receive. Banned. B'bye.

Am I "good enough" as a cyclist to "require" the multitude of nice bikes I own, across the spectrum from carbon roadie to FS all mountain MTB? That question is a lot like asking "am I good enough as a man to require the nice lingerie my wife wears [some of the time!]?"

Well,
if you are enough of a man, you won't require the lingerie (but I do agree it is nice) unless you have been on the bike way too many hours.

Now, back to the original off-topic. I don't require my even mid-level bike, but it sure is a lot more fun than a 20 kg single-speed Dutch bike (which I also have had fun on, lingerie helps a lot in this case). No, the people don't need it but it is fun to ride. If you have the $, then go for it. Better than blowing it on a Hummer used only to run cyclists off of the road.

It is like an accident waiting to happen, you don't want to look, but you cant look away.

Thanks RVD - my apologies for throwing the bait out to the poor sucker in the first place...thought it would give ET a nice opportunity to prove that he's got absolutely no clue whatsoever. "Banging" indeeed, does anyone over 13 think that sort of idea will get them anywhere at all with a real live woman?;)

Exactly. Life is short. Ride the best equipment you can afford, because it's fun. If you've got the money to throw away riding daily on carbon wheels with sew-ups, and that's what you want to do, why not? As the song goes, "Ain't nobody's business..."

+1 Life certainly is short! Enjoy!
