Question Which Historical Cycling Races Should Be Revived?

I want to start a discussion about the races we’ve lost over the years that deserve a comeback. Whether it’s relatively recent events that are no longer on the calendar or legendary old-school races from decades past, which ones do you think cycling needs today?

Giro del Lazio with the Via Appia Antica cobbles!
Put some barriers up and use the climbs that RCS used in the revived version of the race (called Roma Maxima for some reason because those dorks only want to use Giro for the Giro d'Italia) and you have great race!

Meisterschaft von Zürich is the one who immediately springs to mind for me.

I also miss the Tour of California.

Tour of California would have carved out a decent niche as a Tour build up race for up and coming riders to get leadership chances.

Part of the derision for the race stems more from the American overhype factor not what was a decent race at a good time slot for the European audience in mid/late evening.

No love for the Eindhoven TTT?

Ok, that was a joke. But now that I mentioned it, I was reminded of the TTT at worlds during the 2010's. That was the best format for a TTT I have seen, I think. I wasn't thrilled when they scrapped it.

Züri Metzgete and Tour of California indeed!

I kinda miss the early season echelons fest in the Tour of Qatar too.

And iconic wise: Trofeo Baracchi or Bordeaux-Paris.
Bordeaux Paris should be remade in some way

Both of these should immediately become one cycling (or whatever it’s called) projects with large purses.

As a kid I often wondered why northern classics like Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the Het Volk, Paris-Roubaix and the Flèche Wallone were so popular but the Waalse Pijl had apparently been discontinued

Anyway, bring back the Giro del Trentino

First things that come to mind are pretty much an echo of what has already been mentioned: Zürich, California, Qatar and the Critérium International were all somewhat unique and interesting races. I also miss the extensive Italian and Spanish calendars where a lot of races have vanished. If I'm to mention one, I'll say bring back the GP Costa degli Etruschi as the traditional season opener. It's a travesty that the Italian calendar doesn't start until early March with Laigueglia and Strade Bianche.

And also bring back the GP du Midi-Libre.

I would rather see Tour of California than many of the other races outside Europe.

Otherwise I did like some of the smaller French races. Like Criterium International and GP Midi Libre.

Yes, please!
This is my proposal (with a snappy name to match Strade Bianche) which includes three uphill sectors before the final 15 km on flat cobbles - including the ancient ones on Via Appia Antica: The road to Nemi (2 km 5%), through Frascati (3 km 9%), and the iconic cobbles of Rocca di Papa (½ km 11%).

I wish Tour of California, Utah, Colorado, Georgia, and Missouri came back. Or if America did a separate west and east coast Tour. But there’s no demand for it. Though funny to run into find thread since I was looking for the UAE one but in Nevada I just passed a group of about 6 amateur riders all wearing UAE jerseys and riding Colnago. So maybe UAE can help finance the races.

Something like this would be perfect!
