depends where you live. it does get cold in the southern part... but not always rain. south australia is known as the driest state. if you want eternal summer, live close to the equator ;)

Problem is, if it's -5 degrees Celsius you can put on an extra few layers, a balaclava and five pairs of socks and Bob's your uncle, when it's 38 degrees in the shade you suffer no matter what you wear.

But that's for only a month or three each year...

aye i'm telling you, that lleyton fella needs to be watching his girl :D i don't know about aussie birds, i've only ever seen the ones off home & away (and kylie and her sister) and a few of them are fit enough, but most birds on telly look good, for evidence see hollyoaks.

obviously those girls off h&a are better than your average british girl, but i'm not british so that doesn't really make much of a change for me. if i moved there it wouldn't be for the birds

Mate you must have never been to the UK, our women are orange!

All the Australian and UK cities I've been to are rubbish for cycling in but unless you are commuting then it's more important how easy a city is to get out of and what the surrounding areas are like. Only a few of the main land European citites are actually good to ride in.

The fake tan army! Oh how I hated those.

Anyway Adelaide is possibly one of the best cities Ive ever come across in regard to cycling routes. From my house I can be at the foot of 5 climbs over 6kms long all averaging over 6% in less than 15 mins. All these climbs are in natural bush/country areas and most have little traffic. I can also ride into the CBD in less than 10 mins. There arnt many other cities with over a million people that can offer that! Granted I do pay through the nose to live here, in the spawling burbs most people dont have it this good.

I consider myself well traveled and have lived for a couple of years in the UK (I also vote in their elections, lol) and nothing comes close. cycling in the Cotswolds was certainly shiit. Unless you love training and wine though Adelaide can get very dull.

I seem to have missed something here - the link between easy access to good cycling routes from city housing and good road cyclists??? [Attempt to keep thread on track!]
Okay, I can see, more of your training time would be on racing type roads if you're closer, but isn't there something to be said for improving your bike handling skills by dodging traffic??? ;)

PS Have a bike track 200m from front door which gets you out of or into the city (if Hobart can be called that?) within minutes.

Yeah the hills around there are great. I remember seeing a big mountain bike course somewhere near the observatory station in Adelaide hills too. looked great but I didn't get to have a go.

I think I would rather take the 'cold' during the winter in the southern parts of OZ rather than the humidity up north.

I returned home to Melbourne recently for a visit, but live in Ottawa. When I left Ottawa, there was still snow on the ground and temperatures below zero, Melbourne started at 30C when I arrived and then after five weeks this had decreased to 12-14C. I also visited my Grandma in Cairns, tropical north Queensland, and went for a 90 km ride along the coast from Clifton Beach to Port Douglas. The ride almost killed me because of the humidity: I had to stop 2 km from home to rehydrate and eat and got home and immediately slept for 2 hours. My bibs were almost white with dried sweat. Give me 12-14C any day over either 30C and humidity or -10C!

Why are British cyclists so much better than Australian cyclists?? Surely you are **** stirring to get responses and arguements going.

In Australia we have a saying: IT's Called "GET YOUR FU**EN HAND OFF IT" and go back to your bedroom and lick your Mark Cavendish posters, if theres any ink left on them by now. Tosser.

Want to understand for a country with the greatest weather in the world gets rolled by a country with the worst. Maybe the Brits are tougher? Explain it to an American.

I guess the question remains, does the better beer, wine, food and women make us Aussies better or worse cyclists?

I think once you have good wine, food, beer and good women cycling starts to take a distant fifth place. Myabe this is why the British are getting better? DAMN IT!. Oh, well Im off into the beautiful sunny day in the middle of winter, life just sucks here:rolleyes:

Better IF the beer, wine, food and women (men for some of us!) are what you are riding towards
Worse IF the beer, wine, food and women (men for some of us!) are what you are riding away from
:)

It's nothing to do with cycling. It's about beer and weather.:(

I agree - it's a great antidote to threads like "Johan Bruyneel talks AC/LA ".

its better if we actually talk about the cycling, instead of the hot chicks, wine and beer.

Oh yeah, give me cycling any day over that other crap. And Lance is the greatest cyclist of all time.
