I moved the doping posts to the Clinic - feel free to carry on non-doping discussion here and those that want to get into "who did what when" can carry on in the Clinic under the same thread title.

Cheers

Well done 180 - as a neutral I have to admit when I saw this thread appear a couple of days ago I thought there would be an outbreak of WWIII when the Australian contingent awoke!

But far from it - this is one of the best threads there has ever been since I joined. Keep it up!

Cycling roads

If there's a city Melbourne's size that offers as many good road cycling spots near it anywhere, I'd be very surprised.

First cab off the rank, Beach Road, which starts roughly 5 kilometres from the city centre. There are quite literally thousands of roadies on it every weekend morning, and with good reason; it's wide, well-surfaced, flat, has beautiful views, and there's so many packs that you can just draft your way down the road for hours.

In the outer eastern suburbs is Mount Dandenong, which rises about 400 metres above the surrounding terrain; there must be at least half a dozen well-known routes to climb it, from the gentle, steady "1 in 20" to Terry's Avenue, which features a 600 metre stretch of 19% slope if you're feeling particularly masochistic. You can take a suburban train pretty much to the base, or there's a good bike path out from the CBD if you don't want to deal with the traffic.

If you're keen, there's Mount Donna Buang, which is about 60 km from the city centre and is a 16.8 kilometre climb at about 6.4%. It's no Mortirolo (though Mount Baw Baw, about 2 hours' drive from Melbourne, is not far off) but it's a fair bit tougher than the HC climb on Arcalis. I should know, I did them both.

There are dozens of other good cycling roads near Melbourne, but they're some of the highlights.

I will wholeheartedly agree however that Aussie drivers are amongst the least cyclist-friendly in the world.

In England (barring London) it is much easier to get out into the countryside than from most any of the major cities in Australia (Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane/Adelaide/Perth),

It's only hard to get out of Adelaide if you can't ride up a medium sized hill or two, and having medium sized hills on the edge of a city has always been a plus in my books.

I see all the usual aussie comments have come out of the woodwork suprise suprise! The usual better weather, australian coaches, capita, budget etc etc blah blah. Always quick to gloat until they lose and my god the whinging from aussies is deafening! RWC 2003, beijing now the ashes the moaning and whinging is non stop, and they have the nerve to say Brits moan!
The fact is sport in general IS more important to the colonials than it is to the british so they ARE better at it. I have no problem with that good luck to them but why have they got chips on their shoulders when it comes to the poms? They seen to spend more time running the poms down than supporting their own competitors! Let it go!
Anyway if australia is so bloody wonderful why are they all in London, you can't move for aussies?

I think you will find there are quite a few more British ex-pats down under than vice versa...

It's not and I'm a Brit. British bitter is good, British Lager is ***, but European lager is great and we get a lot of it here. Most Aussie larger is rubbish but some of it is very very good. But they pay a lot more for it so all in all we win. Beer, Olympics, the Tour and now the ashes haha go and cry in your beautiful oceans.

Seriously though, it is easy to get to good cycling areas from Perth and Adelaide. Adelaide hills are beautiful for cycling and not to far out of the city at all, and I found commuting around the northern beaches of Sydney fine.

:D I thought we were ;) - as the propellant, if British beer is better then obviously British cyclists will be better and if Aussie beer is better then Aussie cyclists will do better

I bet Team Sky or any future Aussie team wouldn't sip champagne when they celebrate a stage win!

The fatal chore: Aussie husbands 'world's worst'
August 5, 2009

Australian men make the worst husbands in the world because they loathe helping out with the housework, a British study claims.

An economist from Oxford University found that women wanting to settle down were better off finding a bloke from Scandinavia, the United States or Britain than Australia.

Study author Dr Almudena Sevilla-Sanz said that based on her study of 12 developed countries, men and women were both more likely to cohabit or marry if they believed their partner would help out with the household chores and childcare.

But it appears that when it comes to finding a husband willing to help out, Australian women have a tough time.

Dr Sevilla-Sanz's study ranked Australia as the least egalitarian society, making its men unattractive marriage partners because they were more unlikely to do household chores.

Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, the US and Northern Ireland were judged to be the most egalitarian countries, making their men the most attractive marriage partners.

Next were the Netherlands, Ireland, Spain, New Zealand, Japan, Germany, Austria and Australia in last place.

"In egalitarian countries you might, in principle, expect to see women preferring to remain single rather than face the prospect of spending more time doing household chores," Dr Sevilla-Sanz said.

"However, this study shows that in egalitarian countries there is less social stigma attached to men doing what was traditionally women's work.

"For instance, if paternity leave is the social norm, more men take it.

"This leads to men in egalitarian societies taking on more of a domestic role so the likelihood of forming a harmonious household becomes greater, resulting in a higher proportion of couples setting up households in these countries."

The study's findings were based on a survey of 13,500 men and women aged 20 to 45 from each of the 12 countries.

Each was asked about their attitudes to gender, housework and childcare responsibilities.

The study found that women living in less egalitarian countries were 20 to 50 per cent less likely to live with a man compared with women in more egalitarian societies.

The study, titled Household Division of Labor and Cross-Country Differences in Household Formation Rates, is due to be published in the Journal of Population Economics.

...which makes us better cyclists as we're out training and downing a Coopers or three rather than sitting doing the dishes...

the real answer is that Aussies over train.

This study proves it

'Aussie Women unsatisfied in bed'

Over half of Australian women have difficulties getting sexual satisfaction, according to a new survey of more than 400 women, by Deakin University Psychology professor Marita McCabe, and PhD student Katie Giles, who studied Australian women’s sex lives and sexual feelings.

The researchers found that rates of sexual desire were similar to those shown in international studies; however, Australian women appeared to have more problems with arousal and orgasm.

Professor McCabe, who recently presented the data at a sexuality conference on Australia’s Gold Coast said:

All up we found 55 percent of women had a difficulty with sexual satisfaction

It seems women go into the bedroom and expect it will happen quickly, automatically, with orgasm, even be multi-orgasmic, but without spending the time to do so. They’re busy and stressed and not taking the time for their sexual expression.

Further, according to Professor McCabe, the survey revealed that 65 percent of women had some form of sexual dysfunction and half had a diagnosable sexual desire disorder.

Anxiety and depression were found to be contributing factors, but stress and poor body image had the biggest influence on sexual interest and response.

Other scientists were more critical, and Jane Ussher, a women’s health psychologist at the University of Western Sydney, said while she did not dispute the statistics, to label a quarter of the Australian population sexually dysfunctional was ‘not helpful‘.

Professor Ussher was quoted as saying:

To talk about dysfunction implies some abnormality within the women, and whilst many women do have issues around sexual desire, especially in heterosexual relationships, that is very likely to be about the relationship rather than the woman herself.

She went on to say that there was strong evidence to suggest that women with low desire regained their interest in sex once they re-partnered. And, there was also an argument that pharmaceutical companies were trying to position a lack of desire as dysfunctional, so that it could be treated.

Well, you will miss out on AC and As duking it out. LA will spend all his time twittering and making sad faces at the winner.
