You have absolutely no clue on how things work the 3rd week into the tour. Sparticus is not a climber, has about 50-60 pounds more weight. His effort on Verbier probably cost him alot of time today and the last 2 days cost him even more time. When he does the World Championships he is completely fresh and not on the 3rd week of a massive effort. Contador and Andy had the extra motivation of their standings and jerseys, guessing the yellow gave contador probably an extra 15-30 secs today from mind set and stature alone. Apples to oranges.

Agreed. He's a stage racer. If they did an ITT over the same course in a few months, Spartacus would win handily. After 3 days in the high mountains and almost 3 weeks of racing, Contador beat him by a measly 3 seconds.

You cant say that Cancellara was exhausted though. He really saved energy yesterday by dropping back very early just for the ITT.How much did he loose yesterday? 40 minutes?

I agree with you though as the Olympic course was rather similiar as this one and it was an easy win for Cancellara.

Are you kidding? They rode over 5 mountain passes and you think he wasn't exhausted?

He has buried himself at least as much as GC contenders to pace the beginning of the climb or even worse because he doesn't have to worry about one bad day and save himself. If you watch some of the stages he can hardly stay on his bike after finishing the pull. Three weeks of that really takes it's toll.

I don't know about his training but because he is a classics/TT specialist I would assume it to be much higher intensity much lower volume than the GT riders (eg. Boardman used to do ~10h/week while GT riders do >20h/week) which makes him lack in stamina/fatique resistance the same way as GT riders.

Most probably also his personal goal for the Tour was to win the prologue and have the yellow which would put is peak at the beginning of the tour whereas for GT riders it should be the last week.
