Word filter stupidity

Pretty funny that on a cycling site I cannot say that I put my ***, my ****, or my **** on my saddle. Words that wouldn't make a nun blush. Well maybe if I pinched her ***, her ****, or her ****.

I found a new one: dong

I have noticed that a lot of the filtered words are British. Did a British prude who works at CN add every rude word he could think of or what?

The CN censor probably has an encyclopedia of rude words kept in a drawer somewhere - there seems so many of them.
dong is a new one on me, though it sounds like it could be a word pornstars used during the seventies to describe their genitals or something.. We need a scrabble expert to explain that one.

CN word filter scrabble match anyone? :D

Seeing as there's a couple of fantasy cycling comps going perhaps its time for a competition like that.

You get points for swear words that are legal, using a banned word gets you a points penalty.
swearing at the referee gets you an instant disqualification. :p

Actually, I am pretty sure answers were given quite a while ago. The word list was pre-configured when the language filter was engaged and no edits had been made.

A review of the list is underway at the moment - this may result in some words being delisted but please be aware that some other words are likely to be added in their place.

I never heard that explanation. I have also never been on a vBulletin forum that filters the words that CN does.

Why not get rid of everything but the f-bomb and call it day? Warn people if they go overboard.

interestingly the word referring to the bottom beginning with A doesnt get censored when it is part of a bigger word.

note:: any swearing in this post is purely in the intrests of research and to highlight words that SHOULD be in the word filter. (ive never heard of most of those phrases)

I think this has been said before in this thread and others - but no harm in letting folk know - we the mods don't have any ability to fix this. It has been flagged and that's all we can do. I guess there are other prioirites for the development team.

I have no doubt this thread will be a good resource for the dev team if and when they choose to fix it. :)

Cheers

Terry

C is for Camel

camel toe - female genitalia
carpetmuncher - homosexual

ok.. Have deleted the rest of C after discovering that a male chicken is not censored, neither is a liquid excreted from the male genetalia, or a sensitive part of the female anatomy..

my carpet is offended by that.

I trust thats a joke...

Nope. I just don't find words themselves offensive, and there are only a few words that I would eliminate on an Internet forum to maintain a certain level of discourse. Offensiveness is always about context, which is why a word filter is doomed to fail. Dim posted a large number of words that could be added to the filter. Ultimately it would not matter because people will come up with new terms or use words that do pass through the filter in an insulting way.

The "think of the children" argument is a bogus argument by those who want to control others. Anybody who was really worried about the "children" would not be worried about a few words; they would be worried about a hell of a lot more that is available at the click of a mouse on the Internet.

The "we can do this because its not as bad as other things out there" argument is a classic flawed statement. The tone on the CN site is set at the standard it is because CN wants to maintain a level of civility that anybody can enjoy. Therefore, if swearing is deemed unacceptable, it is unacceptable.

the counter to your comment is: "Want to swear? Go elsewhere"
