Nope. I just don't find words themselves offensive, and there are only a few words that I would eliminate on an Internet forum to maintain a certain level of discourse. Offensiveness is always about context, which is why a word filter is doomed to fail.

I guess I am the mod who agrees with that. I accept it is part and parcel of the site, and as a mod I will work with it. But I have disliked it from the day I found out about its existence.

C is for Camel

camel toe - female genitalia
carpetmuncher - homosexual
......

ok.. Have deleted the rest of C after discovering that a male chicken is not censored, neither is a liquid excreted from the male genetalia, or a sensitive part of the female anatomy..

carpetmuncher - homosexual; not quite correct it refers to a lesbian

I just came looking at this thread after I wrote (PI) ****ed and it came up all starry. Thats not a swear word, I am offended as an englishman I am being censored for speaking proper like ;)

The "we can do this because its not as bad as other things out there" argument is a classic flawed statement. The tone on the CN site is set at the standard it is because CN wants to maintain a level of civility that anybody can enjoy. Therefore, if swearing is deemed unacceptable, it is unacceptable.

the counter to your comment is: "Want to swear? Go elsewhere"

the flawed argument is yours. one can be completely uncivil without resorting to any of the banned words, as is often evidenced by discussions in the clinic. civility, as brodeal correctly pointed out, is in the usage.

furthermore, what is the difference between "WTF" (a common expression of surprise) and "what the ****"? not being able to write the word contained in acronym doesn't change what the letters stand for, nor does its use in context necessarily mean someone is being uncivil. that said, how does the forum justify banning parts of words, such as "hillary s****", "****stan", and "**** pound"?

personally, if i were from pakistan, i would find it extremely offensive to have my country's name not pass a word filter. now THAT is uncivil.

It works if you spell it wrong Pakastan :D, or would that be more uncivil?
