bad day?

are we sure?

this is the highest he has ever placed in this event.
It was a bad day, but people also overestimate Pogacar's TT pedigree. I think in sub-47 km/h TTs, he's can compete with Evenepoel, but when it becomes a test of power and aerodynamics and not w/kg there's no real contest.

They then also underestimate just how good Remco is at this.

I sure hope he gets some spark in the road race. Multiple Euros commenting ( complaining) about temps and high relative humidity in Kigali..too different than what they are used to.. I hope all the terrarium conditions don't wilt Pogacar as he tries to train before next week...
Wasn't it like 27° today (80° F)? I get the humidity, but folks can't be complaining about 80°, right?

It was not an MTT.
There was 15km in which they had to pedal, and 10km of them were uphill. It's semantics, but that's a semi MTT, or at the very least it's nothing remotely comparable to today.

It's a test of how fast you go uphill for a long time and then downhill for a long time.

I think 1'15 to Vine and 2'30 to Van Wilder aren't impossible if he comes in with perfect preperation in this ITT.

To me there's overreaction sort of rationalizing this TT wasn't awful by Pogacar.

I think the field today was exceptionally poor.

Pog was bad and he was not bad:
The good: it's his best result in a World's TT, almost on the podium.
The bad: the terrain suited him and a good Pog should be able to become 1st of 2nd in this field.

We had Remco with zero chance of having jet lag, perfect prep, fresh vs. Pog who came from Canada where he raced hard, to Europe to Rwanda (so 100% chance of having some jet lag), not having had too much down time this year. Either Pog is tired and won't shine in the road race, or he's jet-lagged (a bit like Remco after his vuelta win, underperforming in the TT in Wollongong), and with enough rest and acclimatisation, he'll feature as always in the RR.

With regards to Pog's TT in the TdF: those at the end are mostly won by the freshest man, not always by the (intrinsic) best TT.

I think he finishes 20-30s behind Evenepoel.

Like I said earlier, in the greatest form Pogacar has ever been in and a week into a GT, he still lost in a hilly TT to Remco.

I just think people overstate how good Pogacar is in TTs. He's won two TTs that weren't predominantly climbing, and one still had a solid 1.5km at 10%. In every non climbing-dominant TT he does against Remco, Remco should be the favourite. People overhyped a rivalry where Pogacar was the underdog and turned him into the favourite. Obviously he had a terrible day, but with preparation and form being equal he should not have been the favourite.

Here to say what a great ride by Vine

As I said that the Vuelta he is so under rated esp when compared to riders like Ayuso. He just has had so much bad luck with crashes

Also a top ride from Bruno Armarail ...has had great form since June but no win... really deserves one

I'm referring to stage 21, a 33.5 ITT (not MTT) from Monaco to Nice.

don't forget that no one else was trying or targeting this race.

gotta keep the meme going.
It's not a meme at all. Guys who can't buy a 15th place in a Giro ITT are top 5 today.

That's not to say Evenepoel wasn't superb today, but the gaps are absolutely blown up by it.

He's extremely lucky Pogacar showed up and let himself get caught. Least greedy thing he has done in years.

Oh okay it's about Del Toro. Understood and sorry for interrupting, I appreciate the agenda.

That TT didn't have half the climbing of today. Winner went 52.5 kph.

OK. Not an MTT in any way, but still an MTT.
A mountain time trial is just one which significant climbing, ideally in one block. It doesn't mean that ends at the top of the mountain. If it ended at the top of Col d'Eze but had 10km of flat before it you'd be saying it was a MTT, but because there's a downhill they didn't even pedal on it isn't?

An MTT is a specific event. It generally finishes at the top of a climb.

MTT:

Pogi won the ITT for a few reasons.

• Stronger in the whole race
• Course in his backyard
• Better powers of recovery

Rwanda and Kigali specifically have all kinds of laws and traditions that they have worked towards for last @30 years.. Plastic bags are illegal.. Young people but also fairly old people have a legal obligation to go out and pick up trash.. It's a national thing to keep the country clean, have good car, motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian ratio.. From what I have read Kigali has a scarcity of public trash cans because people don't litter and take time to pitch debris in available trash receptacles.. And outdoor smoking is against the law in Rwanda for @10-15 years..

So I think the couple of famous female cyclists who used " air quality " in their personal race reports could have said that and meant something else.
25-30 degrees is workable.. Remco, van Wilder, Vine certainly are all familiar with hot and humid..Belgium is not known for great air quality. Don't know about Holland. and Del Toro grew up in a place where most houses don't have air conditioning or heating because the temperatures in Baja are consistently mild, so if he could tolerate it anyone can! Lol.

Kigali had about 27 degrees today but also low humidity for equatorial area (dew points around 11-12 degrees). Not bad conditions.
