Van der Poel was less aggressive in the middle part of the race than riders like Pedersen. That's what proved decisive, I think.

VDP did less work than any of the top 4...smartly, but much less work.

I'm not sure what you saw that I didn't. He attacked multiple times and wasn't skipping turns.

Don't think it mattered. On this route, nothing stops a Van der Poel in this form. Not even a crash.
