Van Aert was actually very angry about the lack of race radio at the Worlds again. They didn't even know MvdP had crashed.

Very angry sounds as if he was fuming which he certainly was not. He said he can't say anything positive about riding without radio. Your post is worse than a Wielerflits headline :)
He said that if they knew MvdP crashed they might've chased harder, but after this he also said that maybe it's better they didn't know, because MvdP won deservingly anyways.

(I'm against race radios so it's not like I agree with WvA, just your comment rubbed me the wrong way. WvA is pretty much always gracious in defeat)

Yeah + I felt he was more annoyed about the lack of radio's during the protest rather than when MvdP fell.

Haven't been reading the thread so might have missed it, but anybody else thinking about that moment where VDP was caught in a split like in flanders and again they just let him come back? Should have drilled it

With the lack of race radios, and being a split formed right after the restart, I'm not sure the belgians who were at front were aware of whoever was caught behind at the time.

I pretty much agree with all of this. He was very gracious indeed. But (indeed, without fuming) he also made it pretty clear he doesn't like to race without radio's.
Wanting to stay in touch with the team car at all times kind of acknowledges to me that he isn't tactically the smarterst rider though.

Truly great edition and a very deserving winner;he will be a very worthy wearer of the jersey.
What a monster of a ride; I would have been hard pressed to enjoy this more. I really thought
all was lost when he went down; glad it only added to the legend!

Chapeau to Bettiol for giving it all he had, ballsy ride. This one will be hard to top.

Bring on the Vuelta!

so this is how the UK tabloid Sun have reported MvP winning the world championship, "UCI race leader forced to ‘invade’ Scots home hours before he clinched world title" the story continues telling how MvP had to "invade" someones house during the enforced break in the race to do a number 2...

and thats literally the end of the story as the rest just reports about the protestors

yup. In between the trans bashing & eco 'yobs'

National Coach Koos Moerenhout admitted the Men's Elite victor raced to the bog of a nearby resident during the commotion outside Falkirk on the 271km Edinburgh to Glasgow route.

Van der Poel triumphantly crossed the city's George Square finishing line ahead of rivals including Tadej Pogacar and Mads Petersen.

Commenting on the protest, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Our Protest Removal Team has safely removed and arrested five protestors."

Footage on the BBC shows a police van making its way slowly through the peloton as they try to reach the disruption.

The problem is the readership. Like gossip mag devotees some people lap up whatever tickles their fancy. For MVP it was a positive his win even got a story in a news outlet which heavily favours major sports and largely ignores the rest. They will usually write stories about cycling on the basis of nationalism.

I was thinking the whole race “mvdp is so good at hiding until he goes boom”, and I saw attacks left and right from pogacar, Evenepoel, pedersen,… and nobody ever thought (especially not the Belgians when they had numbers): let us wait and see if the big favorite mvdp will take the initiative to chase.

No, they always chase themselves. It’s like they have a big blind spot on their retinas, and mvdp has the talent to remain unnoticed, until it’s too late. Even though he gets the reputation of not being in good position all the time, he was there when it mattered, and he also attacked when it hurt (before his definite attack). He danced like a butterfly and stung like a bee.

Congrats on a very worthy winner (the most dominant of the last 10-20 years?), and I can only hope other riders realize that they have to adapt their tactics, because at the moment, few (if any) can match his explosiveness.
Yes, he raced a great race tactically which he doesn't always do. He did some relatively early attacking and was able to soften people up and see who had the legs today and then took a bit of a break and let the Belgians work. What really worked in his favor is that he knew Tadej was on Remco duty and was never going to let him go and Mads was also super attentive to any attacks.
I feel ike years from now this race will have a chapter in the history of the World Championships or cycling in general.

Also I feel VdP will absolutely go to town on the rainbows. I expect every inch of himself, his bike and his gear to be in rainbows.
I just want WC stripes on the bibs somewhere.

At least US outlets occasionally recognize cycling as a sport. One that isn't reported on very often.....

You'd think they had all seen the video of his "surprise" fly-by at the 2019 Amstel Gold finish and never forgotten it. Julien hasn't forgotten and Wout sure knew it was coming eventually.

Here in Australia I can’t find any mention of the race today. The media only wake up if an Australian does well. Checked a few rival sites and local news is filled with mention of women’s football World Cup, women’s netball, cricket, AFL and the Rugby codes. Nothing on cycling or MVDPs win ☹️
