"Photos of the victims of the Odessa fire which have been circulating on the Internet have cast doubt on the official version of events. It’s now clear that many of the anti-junta activists who occupied the Trade Unions House were neither burned to death nor died of smoke inhalation, but were savagely shot at point-blank range by agents and thugs who had infiltrated the building to kill as many of the occupants as possible, burn the corpses, and then slip away without notice. Some of the victims–like a young woman who was eight months pregnant –were strangled with an electrical chord and left slumped backwards over her desk in a room that shows no sign of fire or smoke damage. In another case, a woman was stripped naked from the waste down, raped, killed, and set ablaze.

In still other cases, victims with bullet-holes through their skulls, had flammable fluid dumped on their heads and were incinerated, leaving a charred head atop a corpse whose clothes were untouched by fire. The sloppily-executed killing-spree proves that the fire was not the result of a spontaneous clash between pro and anti-Kiev demonstrators, but a carefully planned black-op that likely involved foreign Intel agencies working hand-in-hand with the fascist junta government in Kiev. The retrograde logic of Moscow’s interventions has been to strengthen Ukraine’s far right and to help shore up the transitional government in Kiev, even as it implements savage imf cuts. Putin has become nato’s best recruiting sergeant. The fact remains that Russia is reacting, clumsily and defensively, to a continuous eastward thrust by nato, loosely but systematically correlated with the eu’s social-engineering projects. The Atlantic Alliance penetrated ex-Soviet borders in 2004, with the accession of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia (along with Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania). By 2008, Washington had put Ukraine and Georgia’s memberships on the table.


The return of the Crimea to Russia was a by-blow of the crisis in Ukraine, but the two are analytically distinct. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, the Ukraine has come to constitute a latent version of a classic power vacuum, a result of the cultural and economic disaggregation of the country into two roughly equal halves. Under the Soviet system the Ukrainian ssr never functioned as a homogeneous state, in part because its key cities were so important to the Soviet Union as a whole: Donetsk for coal and engineering, Dnepropetrovsk for missiles, Kharkov for satellites and tanks—all had closer links with Moscow than with Kiev, itself a vital centre for the ussr’s high-tech industry. Today, most of the migrant flow to the eu comes from the less populated western regions—Lviv is only thirty miles from the Polish border—where much of the agricultural land has been leased to multinationals and the factories closed down. The fragmentation of the country has made possible a political system more open and pluralist than Russia’s, as different power blocs re-combine against each other. But it has also prevented the Ukrainian state from achieving much coherence or stability. [7] It is not only weaker than its counterpart in Russia but still more corrupt, captured by competing billionaires, whose oscillation in power has become the hallmark of its recent history. Thus Poroshenko, the confectionery magnate, and Pinchuk, Kuchma’s son-in-law, can aim to take control of the government apparatus in Kiev in a way that Moscow tycoons like Prokhorov or Khodorkovsky can now only dream of.

The congenital weakness of the Ukrainian state, rooted in these conditions, has drawn the West and Russia into rival bids to fill the strategic vacuum. Both sides’ room for manoeuvre is limited by their mutual involvement elsewhere: the us needs Moscow’s assistance on Afghanistan and Iran, a greater prize than Ukraine; Russia confronts Washington’s hold over the international banking system. In Ukraine, the priorities for Moscow are two-fold: to hold off any further penetration of nato or the eu inside the ex-ussr, and to prevent political contagion from the less regimented Ukrainian political arena into Russia itself. On the Western side, the eu is constitutively enmeshed in the logic and rhetoric of enlargement: if Turkey is to be invited in, on what grounds should Ukraine be excluded? Costs—per capita gdp in Ukraine is now a third of Turkey’s—and caution about provoking Russia, its major gas supplier, have long inhibited the eu from too forward a policy. Germany in particular has held back, halting the Ukraine and Georgia at the entrance ramp to nato in 2008. But other eu states—notably Poland and Sweden, the powers that invaded Russia in the 17th and 18th centuries—have become much more aggressive in pressing for an eastward thrust. For Washington, meanwhile, there is simply the imperial automatism of the global hegemon: if there is a power vacuum in a medium-sized country, the State Department’s reflex response is to move in and take charge. In Ukraine, the us has much less to lose than the eu, though also much less to gain than Russia. But once the crisis broke in Kiev, Washington could not resist the opportunity to construct a regime to its liking (as the graphic exchange between its functionaries printed overleaf makes clear). A subsequent issue of the Review will examine the scene inside the country and assess the consequences of these external pressures, overdetermining the fate of the people of Ukraine, whose needs are foreign to them all.

In Ukraine, a grisly new strategy – bringing in neo-Nazi paramilitary forces to set fire to occupied buildings in the country’s rebellious southeast – appears to be emerging as a favored tactic as the coup-installed regime in Kiev seeks to put down resistance from ethnic Russians and other opponents.

The technique first emerged on May 2 in the port city of Odessa when pro-regime militants chased dissidents into the Trade Unions Building and then set it on fire. As some 40 or more ethnic Russians were burned alive or died of smoke inhalation, the crowd outside mocked them as red-and-black Colorado potato beetles, with the chant of “Burn, Colorado, burn.” Afterwards, reporters spotted graffiti on the building’s walls containing Swastika-like symbols and honoring the “Galician SS,” the Ukrainian adjunct to the German SS in World War II.

This tactic of torching an occupied building occurred again on May 9 in Mariupol, another port city, as neo-Nazi paramilitaries – organized now as the regime’s “National Guard” – were dispatched to a police station that had been seized by dissidents, possibly including police officers who rejected a new Kiev-appointed chief. Again, the deployment of the “National Guard” was followed by burning the building and killing a significant but still-undetermined number of people inside. (Early estimates of the dead range from seven to 20.)

However, as resistance to Kiev’s right-wing regime expanded in the ethnic Russian east and south, the coup regime found itself unable to count on regular Ukrainian troops to fire on civilians. Thus, its national security chief Andriy Parubiy, himself a neo-Nazi, turned to the intensely motivated neo-Nazi shock troops who had been battle-tested during the coup. .....

today is another watershed day in the latest history of europe. ukraine, the 2nd largest country on the continent disintegrating. the process that started with crimea is hardly over...the southern city of odessa, where the massacre has just taken place, is likely next. below is my quick assessment sourced from wiki and someone local who know like no one else.


before 16/3/2014 : Population-45 mln, economy 100%,
(unitary state)

after 16/3/2014: Population -42 mln, economy 95%
(Crimea separation)

after 11/5/2014
(Donets & Lugansk split): Population -35 mln, Economy -60%

all the putsch govt had to do to save the country was to guarantee the separatists their language and some degree of self rule.

France won't cancel warship deal with Russia: sources

(Reuters) - France will press ahead with a 1.2 billion-euro ($1.66 billion) contract to sell helicopter carriers to Russia because cancelling the deal would do more damage to Paris than to Moscow, French diplomatic sources said on Monday.

France has come under pressure from Washington and some European partners to reconsider its supply of high-tech military hardware to Moscow. It had said it would review the deal in October - but not before.

However, French diplomatic sources said on Monday the 2011 contract with Russia for two Mistral helicopter carriers, with an option for two more, would not be part of a third round of sanctions against Moscow.

"The Mistrals are not part of the third level of sanctions. They will be delivered. The contract has been paid and there would be financial penalties for not delivering it.

SIDEBAR Report: US private soldiers fighting in Ukraine

Berlin (dpa) - Soldiers from a private US security company with a record of alleged atrocities in Iraq are supporting Ukraine‘s security forces in the volatile east of the country, the German newspaper Bild reported Sunday.

The report, citing Germany‘s federal intelligence agency BND, said 400 of the heavily-armed men employed by the group formerly known as Blackwater were deployed in the vicinity of Lugansk where pro-Russian separatists are seeking self-rule.

The BND declined to comment on the report, while the security company - now known as Academi - dismissed similar reports in March.

Bild reported that according to a BND assessment, US intelligence services had knowledge of the covert involvement of the private soldiers in Ukraine. BND representatives relayed the information to Germany‘s federal chancellory on April 29, Bild said.

A belated thanks to Blutto, Python, Foxxy and others who have posted info on the situation in the Ukraine, often from sources not easily available to us English speaking Americans. Here is my own little contribution. The dogs of war have clearly been released in eastern Ukraine:

Inside a drab conference room, Yacubovich was forced to do a video interview in which he was “strongly urged” by the Russian journalist filming it, he said later, to call on the [pro-Kiev] government to halt a military campaign against the separatists that has brought new casualties almost by the day. To open the video, a man wearing a black ski mask and bulletproof vest addressed the camera: “Now our faces are covered, but soon they will be revealed.”

The masked man described himself as a leader of a little-known group that called itself the Russian Orthodox Army — and whose appearance has raised concerns that the uprising might be spiraling beyond anyone’s control. In a recent interview just six floors above the conference room, Alexander Kishinets, the “war commissioner” for the shadow government operating out of the building, called it another sign that “some people who are getting power and arms are becoming like Napoleon or Stalin, and just trying to get more power.”

“There is not good coordination,” Kishinets added.

Not far beneath the surface, eastern Ukraine has an ugly history of internecine violence — and many of the region’s business and political figures are said to have visited extreme cruelty on their rivals as they jockeyed for power. Now those demons seemed to have been awakened anew. Veren spoke of myriad and murky threats from his rivals, mentioning one example of two pro-Russians who he said had recently surfaced in a river with their stomachs opened up.

...just glanced through my usual links of daily news on ukraine.

as I mentioned earlier, my menu of sources includes all sorts of views in main euro languages – left, right, nationalists, ultras etc. included is the ukrainian pro govt agency unian.

among the usual declarations of fighting terrorists in the ukrainian east, one headline grabbed my attention: 'the svoboda party demands to ban the communists and the party of regions'...

so far, i have generally avoided calling the pro-govt nationalists any tags one frequently sees, like neo-nazis or fascists. but that headline did not exactly strike me as an example of freedom and democracy the west is trying so hard to associate the present govt with...so, i decided to check if the rt's claims that the Svoboda party, the leading edge of the revolution, was indeed branded neo-nazi by the eu.

as always, the google search helped instantly. on the very 1st page was the genuine prime source:

the indisputable fact is that the svoboda party is not only in parliament and govt, it holds several key national security ministries, as well having own armed militia.

why the glorious western media is so quiet now ?

i get it! now the govt west wanted to install is in power, so the neo-nazis became freedom fighters.:rolleyes:

most certainly correct. it is a proxy affair where the main actors stakes are very different.

putin's proxies are not in mexico, canada or cuba, but in his own backyard he wants keep free of nato's freedom gear.

I'm loving the new Australian budget. It's been made substantially more difficult for people under the age of 30 to get welfare payments. That'll be a right laugh for me, I live in an area where the majority of young people are unemployed and need the dole to get by. What are they going to do when they can't get their money from the government? It's about to get West Baltimore up in here. There are already drive-by shootings happening pretty much on a daily basis. Will that bump to defence be used in putting down the soon-to-be rise of violent drug lords in western Sydney? Will it ****.

This is what baffels me the most. America, Australia, wherever you want, the government puts more and more money into the military. what about building a bridge anytime soon ey? or even better, give the kids some schoolbooks from after 1950...
