Very epic. Nys and Vantornhout were incredible. A shame Mourey and Pauwels had to drop because of mechanical issues.

Also, Van Der Haar 3rd at age 21, despite bad start!

What a day for the Dutch though. Good grief. They will dominate men's cyclocross if they do not bolt en masse to road racing.

The course did indeed get tougher. It was snowing during the race as well.

What a fantastic day for Dutch cycling. Probably tomorrow the media tomorrow will report the fact someone doped 30 years ago and will totally forget about the great effort these youngsters put in. It's only cyclocross maybe, but still. Epic stuff.

I was extremely happy to see Nys win.

Very happy for Van der Haar too. What a great future that kid has. He is great to watch as well. His new American nickname is apparently "Van der Holeshot".

Today during the warm ups the only rider to ride the steep run up was Powers. The crowd started chidding the rest for not riding it. Finally Sven ran to the top and watched Powers ride it. He then rode back down it and rode it up. Crowd roared and had a good laugh. Great day.

What a great day of racing. At the end of the day the course had become really hard and technical which ofcourse was great!

Of all the belgians I really hoped Nys would win and he did. His career certainly deserved 1 more WC. Besides that he's a really nice guy that supports his sport to the max. Rides to win in every race while others really peek for the WC.

About Vos riding faster than the man. The course got harder and harder throughout the day so you can't compare lap times, else Matthieu van der Poel would've become world champion among the elites. He rode laps at an average of 36km/h while the pros rode 23km/h

True, the worlds times are incomparable. There was a clear difference between the morning rides and the pro's course.

However, it should be said that during the world cups, Mathieu van der Poel was posting laptimes as fast as the better pro's ...

But this thing of the course getting harder is often true, not always as extreme as today, but after the juniors, espoirs and women ride, the course is always harder than it was at the beginning. Besides that, Van Der Poel has to do less laps. And besides that, Van Der Poel is obviously an extreme talent, and so is Vos.

I just read that Louisville and USA Cycling had to step in to make for a $250K shortfall because a major sponsor failed to come up with promised $$. More striking is that they have sold only 2500 tickets! Unless that dramatically improves this will be the last World's held in the US. Let's face it, the US is not, nor will it be ever be, receptive to the great sport of cross or for that matter any cycling event. Americans just don't get it and never will. That's my pessimistic take on it.

I would call the event a success.

While that is impressive, I don't put much stock in lap times across races. There is a lot of strategy going on and lap times can be affected by crashes (own or other riders), riders blocking, etc. It is at best a rough metric.

Stybar, Albert & Boom did as well at the same age. Even Nys back in the days. So that's not uncommon, though.

VDH also raced less this season (which is normal at that age but he was fresher).



Agreed with Kwibus. Nys has often been trashed for his Worlds losses and his too heavy schedule, despite winning it already once. Two titles is probably more to his standards.

But it shows that in the end, what matters is consistency throughout the winter, like on the road, what matters is consistency throughout the season.

Nys is probably the greatest crosser of all time (while some won many more World titles) because he got so many ranking events. And Albert is probably the best crosser of 2012/2013 despite is monumental flop of yesterday.

Do you reckon Van der Haar and Van der Poel will move to road racing full time in the future. especially Van der Poel coz his father was also a very good road racer and Mathieu himself finished in the top 10 at the Junior Worlds' last year.
