It's self-evident that the poll will only be answered by a very small, distinct, and possibly somewhat elite fraction of the cycling public.

I would guess that skews it pretty hard toward people who know how to behave, because honestly, when I'm stopped fixing a flat -- and I've fixed five of them in the last two weeks (apparently I have angered TheMerckx) -- about six out of ten cyclists zip by without a word. Often, it seems, purposely not meeting my gaze (I'm looking to catch their glance, smile, and wave them off, with thanks -- and to save them them the trouble of overmuch slow-down in doing a good deed).

But a surprising number of people seem to try not to look. So very far from what I was taught. And very different from what people are self-reporting here, as the poll is currently at close to 90% "slow down and ask". Not the reality I'm seeing out there. Hmm.

Perhaps it's merely a sad comment on the place i ride (SFBay Area) and how either self-involved, or possibly wary and skittish, people around here are. Still, it's a rich person's sport, and we're all decked out with nice stuff, riding through the wealthy areas up on the hillsides. So I tend to discount the idea that they're sensing a trap... :)

Guessing there may just be a) more self-justifying jerks in my zip code, and/or b) more thoughtful and well-adjusted people frequenting this site, than in the general cycling public.

Or maybe it's just my uniform of full-Postal-with-Yellow-Jersey Team Kit...?

(joking, joking)...

This is my one exception for offering assistance, If I see a stranded Lance look-a-like I won't even acknowledge their presence.

not joking

I learned after stopping on my bike once that boys don't like help with flats from girls on a pink bike!

Even offered my pink floor pump that is in my car, not pink, at all times to I guy I was parked near on a popular bike road in Malibu. I was getting ready for a group ride that is a distance from my house. The dude seemed to be having issues with CO2. A male friend rode up while I was there. He took my pump and the guy let him use it on his tire.

Don't fear pink!

While I am good at flats, I do appreciate help with chain issues. Only happened once, was totally confused. About to call for ride home and a lovely man rode by, stopped and fixed it! :)

Hey, wait a minute ShawnB...are you saying that this poll wasn't conducted by the same rigorous standards used by Gallup with a plus or minus 3% margin of error???
Well, you're obviously right about that! The folks who passed me by last week without looking (the reason for this poll) are probably not involved in this site.
As a fellow Northern Californian, all I can say is that most of the people I know and ride with would have offered you assistance...even with the Lance kit.
Welcome to the site, Shawn. Enjoy the ride.

From what I've experienced, in crowded areas very few people slow down and check on a stranded rider, but in more remote areas heavily trafficked by cyclists, everyone will slow down to check on things, even if it's a group just eating on the side of the road. I can't tell you how many times I've stopped with my group and a rider rolls by and asks if everything is ok.
