however, what do you do when a sprinter takes yellow and holds it for five days. No one else holds it for more than four. With four stages to go, the greatest, most complete rider takes yellow for the first time, he leads the sprinter by over three hours on GC, there are even two more high mountain stages, but there is no way this rider can hold yellow for five or more days to win.

do you then cancel the last four stages and give the win to the sprinter who is three hours down...?

It would definitely keep the route designers on their toes. However, it would defeat the purpose of testing recovery over three weeks. At most you would have to be able to last a top shape for 12 days, and probably less, as long as you were yellow for all of them.
