Some statistics. I've mentioned 18 stages. Only 2 of them have a hard MTF (Passo Coe and Lavaredo)
You're perfectly right.

Given that 2009 seems a little bit lonely without any mention, I'll say The stage up to Monte Petrano.
Also the Pinerolo stage was good.

2004: nothing special...perhaps the Presolana stage with Mortirolo and Vivione

I think the Cles-Bormio 2000 stage could have been really good if they hadn't used the Passo Mendola the previous day. If they'd started in Bolzano and added Mendola ahead of Tonale-Gavia-Bormio 2000 then the final climb wouldn't have been as anticlimactic. 118km that day simply wasn't enough to make it a proper test.

Best Giro Stage

I really enjoyed the dirt and mud from last year( can't recall stage # or name...)

Also, I don't think this one has been mentioned yet, but the final stage 2 years ago with Maenchov crashing on the pave' was absolutely "edge of the seat" viewing. Plus, how can you beat the raw emotion he showed after finishing!!!

Well, that was a great stage, but only for the last 10 minutes :)

The 2003 Cascata del Toce, although the only climb that day,was pretty good, with Pantani's late attacks.
+1 for Chianale, that was really epic with all the ice on the Sampeyre and Esischie, the massive gaps and the crashes involving Garzelli and Pantani.
Plan de Corones 2006 probably would've been great too,if they went all the way to the top.

Yeah, MTFs have become a bit overused, I guess because ski resorts pay well for stage finishes.

My votes would be for Sestriere 2005, plus Montalcino and Aprica last year. Not very original, I'm afraid!
