Two-time Vuelta de Chile stage winner, two-time Rutas de América stage winner and two-time Pan-American madison gold medallist Cristopher Mansilla, one of the younger prospects that had been slated to race on the PinoRoad team before the manager ran off with the money, and spent a few years with Start Cycling Team racing in South America, died on Monday following complications arising from Covid-19. He also had a strong haul of silver and bronze medals from the Pan-American Championships in the omnium, scratch race and in the road race, and was a familiar face from a variety of flatter races all over South America, notching placements in the Vueltas a Venezuela and Uruguay, and also racing several races in the Chinese mini-seasons in the mid-2010s.
Former teammate Pedro Palma recalled that although he had no known underlying conditions, he had been susceptible to pneumonia and had problems with persistent colds during several years based out of Santiago which had kept him out of a number of races or forced abandons. His last contact with the outside world was to tell people that due to the impact the virus had had on his lungs he was to be placed into a medically-induced coma and intubate him against progressively worsening pulmonary thrombosis. He was two weeks shy of his 31st birthday.
