Well while I would have been ok with nibali going solo for 50 km for an epic win - I'm not at all happy with some comPlete nobody steLing phils rightful win!! :D. Haha

In all honesty - zaug rode incredibly well. You can't say it was a lucky win, or from a break that wasn't chased etc - he won it by great riding

Phil did everything right. Got himself into the position to win, but couldn't do it. Never thought I would say that this year

I allways thought it worked like de team-Clas. The 5 best every race are giving team points. So every race the 5 best.
It's impossible to say who are the 5 best before the season is over. So with only the 5 best riders of the team it itsn't possible to have any ranking halfway during the season. So I definately dont onderstand the system if it's the way you describe it.

I thought it was whichever 5 riders have the most points on the team rather than a team-classification way. The ranking would be rolling throughout the year that way.

Well that was a helluva way to wrap up the season.

I read your excellent introduction, Hitch, and then stopped reading so that I could go over to NBC/Universal and watch the race. And it didn't disappoint. Oliver Zaugg rode a smart race and pulled off a great win. The only thing I like about Leopard Trek is the jerseys. Still, well before Zaugg crossed the line I was rooting for him. Also, Nibali was exciting to watch, but I just didn't see any way he could hold out to the end. Too bad, 'cause that would have been cool, too.

Now it's time to dig out the cycling DVDs. :)

I think this is the case. Check the link posted by roundabout earlier, Zaugg is listed as 5th rider now. He apparently bested Bennati by 4 points just with this win. Which then would mean that LEOPARD TREK gained a whole 4 points with Zaugg's win, since they lost Bennati's 96 ... right?

He had a mechanical on the descent of the Sormano (where Gilbert, Nibali et al attacked) and he had to wait to get a new bike. Never got back, obviously.

OK, so what is Sky to do? They've got as many guys in the lead group as anybody else, just let Nibali go and go for the Bruyneel approach ("we had four guys in the top 20, isn't that AMAZING??")?

No it ain't amazing. If I were one of these Sky riders I'd be ****ed. Having to work so hard ... for nothing.

I think it's irresponsible to say "You know, boys, you have to do the dirty job for me, but I won't be able to finish it off." Come on !

Trying to win and still lose, that's OK in an "every man for himself" situation, not when it involves domestiques !

they or the rider wont know that he didn't have it yesterday and it's a gamble, if it pays off it would have been brilliant.I am a great supporter of vincenzo but your point is kinda strange.

It's the last race of the season. It's not like it's going to compromise their other goals, why not work the domestiques? It's their job.

Andy Schleck tried to win the Tour de France and didn't. Who was ahead of him in the escape on the Galibier stage? Are you saying that Andy shouldn't have tried to win there, because it involved using one of his domestiques to pace himself so it wasn't mano a mano?

+1

If you try you might lose if you don't even try you've already lost

Well I disagree on that, actually. Uran should have known it, even with 40km to go. These guys are experienced ... They feel it if they don't have the legs ...

I wouldn't have said anything if he finished top5 or even top10 but 19th ...

And I'm not a particular fan of Nib's. Just enjoyed his move.

If Uran had finished top 7 and three places ahead of Gilbert, Sky would have topped the UCI rankings. Rogers and Lofkvist would not have counted as they are outside the top five riders for the team.

Lol, that sounds like a dumb system of only 5 riders counting but wouldn't expect anything less from the UCI
Anyway I'd rather Lovquist had gone for the win and to hell with the points.

he punctured right before the Ghisallo and didn't make his way back to the 30/40-man peloton who decided the race

What is there to get upset about? Putting in the all that work doesn't guarantee a win, it ensures a scenario where you have a better chance to maximize your team's chances of success. They had the strongest team at that point, but not the strongest rider. You can't blame Uran for not having the legs to finish it off. It's a long season and even Gilbert didn't have it when the selection was made. Shoot, when Zaugg went, no one could answer, none of the big names.

Are you speaking from experience? Martin is quoted as saying that prior to GdL he was feeling extremely fatigued to the point in a previous race he was almost falling asleep on his bike (I'm assuming an exaggeration but still..). He started GdL with less than positive sensations. Where did he finish?

His chain broke off and the team car wasn't allowed on the Sormano descent. By the time he had a new bike he was already a minute behind the chase group at that time.

Another chapter in the Dutch bad luck story 2011

I think Cancellara if he survives could be a threat. If Zaugg gets in a break i envisage him being able to stay away maybe. Scarponi has not raced much as of late so i am not sure how well he shall be.

I am soooooooo good PG 5 if anyone wants proof.

Have not been on here for a while so delayed reaction.

Great ride by Zaugg. Nice to see Martin go well, i thought his sprint was not that great. Foolish ( astonishing ) attack by Nibali.

Can't believe riders like Rogers and Tommy L did so much work for Uran. Nice to see someone from Leopard Trek win who is underrated ( wanted him in my CQ team before he won this though ) and at their last race as well.

In my opinion that makes his win even bigger.
Goss was a semi-favourite in MSR, Vansummeren was someone you wouldn't dismiss entirely for Roubaix.
Zaugg was as much of an outsider as they get, but he rode a good race. Staying in the peloton, he of course profited from Nibali's attack - nothing happened until Nibali had been caught. And on Villa Vergano, he attacked at the best moment, just after Basso had brought everybody to the brink of cracking.

Well raced, and won.
In my opinion this win is more deserved than Nuyens' win in the Ronde.

Would have been better if at the Ronde Chavanel won, from a sense that he worked more. I suppose i could then just say that Nuyens used his team but they weren't a factor either.

Ofcourse it sucks if you worked for nothing, but they had Uran and looking at his results last month they had plenty of reason to ride and see what he could do. In the end it was dissapointing, but if you don't try then you will never win.
